Is visa approval in Thailand dependent on the immigration officer's discretion?

Is this legit visa advice? Is it really dependent on the officer’s discretion? It coincides with someone telling me at Immigration this week that I should replace the 30 with a 60, but I didn’t take it seriously. To be honest, I have a flight out next month already, so it has to be 30 anyway, but when I come back later this year I’d love to get a 60-day extension instead… Something I was told on this page is not the expected procedure. Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the legitimacy of advice given about Thai visa extensions, particularly regarding the 30-day and 60-day Covid visa extensions. Many comments highlight that extensions can vary based on the immigration officer's discretion, and while it is generally required to first obtain the 30-day extension, some have reported success in obtaining a 60-day extension directly. The conversation also touches on the varying practices of different immigration offices and the options of using visa agents versus applying independently.

I've used that agency before for simple things, they were very, very organized and efficient. Had my Covid extension done in 24 hrs, from time they picked up my passport to time they dropped it back off. I'm not saying that will be your exact experience, and mine was last year, but I would definitely use them again.

Yes, just every step is very organized, and they follow through. I was very happy with them.

their communication seems really good, even here.

Their English syntax is imperfect, so I can't tell what they mean. Plus that "agent" sometimes offers technically illegal services while claiming they are legit. I suggest going straight to Immigration and seeing what they suggest (many Imm. officers speak at least some English these days, and that also may help.)

60 days covid also so easy
Raj *******
no need go agent so easy 30 days every one approved
Natalia ********
There’s no need to go to the agency. I went to Bangkok’s immigration counter K, and after arriving on a 30 days exemption - paid 1900 thb and asked for 60 days Covid extension. Was given, without extra paperwork, after this 60 day’s expiration they told me in person I can extend again for 30 days .

@Natalia *******
It will depend on the province.

Plenty of travelers have reported trouble obtaining a 60 day covid extension directly on top of a visa exempt entry / tourist visa, and are pushed to first apply for a 30 day extension they should be obtaining.

Your experience confirms that it is possible to apply on your own, but the general consensus at the moment is that not currently the norm.

no they don’t. It’s official immigration news of Thailand.

it’s the law, before you go please check Google Covid visa extension, this time it’s extended until 24th August, so if yours expires before -Just go and no need smart dressing, all good and legit. BTW: when I first went for extension I literally searched web in a taxi and found a blogger who claimed that Covid extensions are still valid. At immigration they won’t tell you unless you ask - that’s the trick))

@Natalia *******
Thank you for sharing your experience.

What also would be helpful for the poster would be the date when you applied for the extension, as some offices change their process / policies.

I guess it pays to do a little enquiring to find out which branches are more permissive. I bet if you come in very politely and dressing smart the discretionary aspect will work in your favor too. I’ll try my luck with 60 days when I do my second incursion into Thailand later this year. Thanks!
Jim **********
It's a common practice from that agency and others to make you buy their service for an incredible high price up to 4 times the price as the official price!

Many ways to get longer visas. All legit and easy. Wouldn’t waste time worrying about it if you’re already good with current visa. I think you’re asking when you come back will you be able to do what you want to do but should ask what’s the best visa for you when you return and under what conditions. You’ll get great advice for the best visa solution with that.
Marc ********
I have seen it already done with an agency

We were referring to the 60 day covid extension, as this comment was originally on a post talking about these extensions.

Yes it is true, and your luck of the draw will also depend on which immigration you apply for it at.

We ensure ahead of time that it is possible for our clients before accepting the case.

Our fee for the described situation is 6,000 THB, and it already includes the 1,900 THB government fee as well as document courier pickup/drop off in Bangkok from your condo/hotel ( all of our in-country services are 100% refundable if not successfully obtained ).

You will receive a full 60 day extension without an under consideration stamp, but please keep in mind that currently the last day to apply for these type of extensions is August 24th, and we may not accept the case if you request too close to that deadline (unless they extend it again).

You can reach our team via LINE here:

What you are trying to do is possible through the standard route of applying on your own its just enforced differently depending on the office, history, and officer.

There are plenty of people who have obtained a covid extension directly on top of their tourist visa / exempt entry in this group.

We assume your intention of doing this is to prolong your stay as you fear the covid extensions may not exist past August 24th. Under normal circumstances you should be applying for the 30 day extension, and the officer may feel that you are abusing the covid extension, as you still can obtain the 30 day extension. But another officier may not mind, and still allow you to obtain the covid extension as you technically may still qualify for it.

This is not Thailand specific, and there are many countries which have processes where an officer can use their own discretionary powers to determine what should be done. You may get denied the first attempt, and then approved the next attempt as your situation can fall in-between the lines.

We honestly do not believe that these 60 day covid extensions will even be possible later this year, as they have already reduced the deadline extension term to only 1 month. It was supposed to be extended until September but it was only extended until August. We interpret this as a tapering off of these types of extensions. Because of this you may be better off by applying for a Tourist Visa before your next arrival (you may use the evisa system to do this).

You can do everything on your own. It's the simple answer, there is nothing else to add to that. It's not 100% success rate. Here in Chaiyaphum, you can do whatever, it's a chill immigration.
Miguel *************

@Maxim **********
you're reading too much into it. I didn't ask any agents to share any secrets, just to confirm that they can achieve something that would otherwise not be possible via the standard route. How they manage to do it is something I didn't ask.
Maxim ***********
You are asking too many questions. You are asking agents to share their secrets. Everyone takes their cut, it is bribery. It's not legal per se but it's legit. I've used Thai Visa Centre many times in the past. They are legit. Understand that you are paying more to have peace of mind in the process. The way things work in Thailand is not something you can understand after being here only a few months. So you will have to accept not knowing everything.

@Thai *****************************
well, if you ensure that an extension that shouldn't happen in normal circumstances unless it's preceded by the 30-day one will happen while not being preceded by the 30-day one, you are effectively bypassing it. :-)
THAI ******************************
@Miguel ************
"bypass" would be the wrong word as we just ensure that the extension will happen as requested. You can attempt to do this on your own as well, but a successful outcome will depend on multiple factors.

You can try asking in this group to find out which specific provinces are handling the extensions how you prefer, but keep in mind this may require traveling to another province if you are in a unfavorable province.
Frank-Steven ***********
@Thai *****************************
That is definitely true! Of all the plenty extensions I got over the last three years, it was never the same procedure. Every immigration office, heck even every immigration officer does things differently and wants different things - although the extension should work exactly the same throughout Thailand. Oh well - part of the game, I guess. I understand why people eventually resort to paying a good premium to agencies to not have to deal with the whole immigration office experience anymore. 😅
Miguel *************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Thai *****************************
so you bypass the 30-day extension first rule and offer a 60-day covid extension directly... up to August, 24th, I would assume.
THAI ******************************
@Frank-Steven **********
You can obtain a covid extension extension on your own without an under-consideration stamp, but it may depend on which immigration office you apply at as well as your history, and the officer.

Not all offices enforce the guidelines the same way, and there is sometimes room for their own interpretation. This also changes from time to time. Some offices always issued under-consideration stamps, and then they stopped, and some do it sparingly.

You can try asking in the group, and I'm sure you will have many reports of full 60 day extensions without an under consideration-stamp.
Frank-Steven ***********
@Thai *****************************
Curious: Why can an agency get the covid extension without that “under consideration” nonsense and an individual cannot do without this unnecessary bureaucracy? I guess there is brown envelopes for officials involved, right? Oh man … Thailand.
Shayne **********
Depends on how much you pay? If it's as they are claiming, it's not legit!
Matthew *************
A 60 day regular extension doesn’t exist.
Miguel *************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Matthew ************
which is why I asked if it was possible at an officer's discretion.
Brandon ************
99% of the time the immigration office will require you to have taken your 30 day extension first. Some of the previous renewals of the covid extension even explicitly stated you MUST take the 30 day extension first.

1% of the time they will let you apply without taking the 30 day extension.

As with all things immigration, basically everything is at the officer's discretion.

An agent will be able to get you covid extension with more surety than you can, and probably even skip the 30 day extension, but obviously it's going to cost you.
Miguel *************

@Brandon ***********
I was reading your first sentence and straightaway thought to myself “and the 1% would be via an agent”.

The difference is if you do it yourself it will cost 1900baht, agent will charge anything up to 9000 baht. As they say in Thailand "Up To You"

wow, congratulations! To be fair, I’m pretty happy just staying for 5-6 months or so, so I’ll do 2 now (30+30 because I couldn’t apply for a proper visa with no Thai embassy where I was living) and get 3 more months after I come back.

There’s always the student visa if I want to add a full year later.
Jonas *************
Everyone can get 90d+1y for retirement. Nothing to do with giving extra bahts. But you typically need to visit twice.
Sam ********
@Miguel ************
won’t get denied. Every one of these Agents have a connection inside and they never get denied. I got a 90 day extension plus 1 year on top. I had to pay so everyone made a few Bhat along the way and that is totally cool with me. I get to stay for 15 months now. Paradise

There is talk of a proposal to go to 45 days exempt plus 45 day extension but not official yet
Wayne *********
@Thai *****************************
Not every one can do evisa, Australia can not.

I did say it was only a proposal.
THAI ******************************
@Wayne ********
This did happen before in 2021 but it did not last that long.

However they were not doing 45 day extensions, it was still 30 days.

Also they have submitted this proposal multiple times already this year, and the main reason.

We believe the core reason it was approved in 2021 was because of the 14 day quarantine which was required. Before without the addition 15 days you would not have enough leadtime to apply for some visas (after your quarantine you would only have 16 days if they did not extend it).

Once thailand launched the evisa system the need for this was not as necessary, and that's most likely why it was so short lived.
Phil ********
it's always up to the individual officer's discretion.
Wayne *********
The 60 day covid extension could be finished by the time you come back. So no one can promise it will be available when you come back

@Miguel ************
no such thing as a regular 60 day extension. Its the covid 60 day extension which will end

I didnt answer that as you said your leaving. And when the covid extension stops it will not matter as 60 days will not be available to get first or 2nd anyway

my understanding was that even if a Covid extension is available to me, I cannot apply for it unless I served one 30-day extension first. And the post is about whether a regular extension can actually be of 60 days, at the officer's discretion.

At this point doubtful Covid extensions will be available later this year. If all you need is 30 then get 30.
