What could a 60-day extension granted for a tourist visa in Thailand mean, and how should I verify it?

Went today to chaengwattana immigration office for tourist visa extension. Was the very first time for me going there and applying for visa extension of any sort so was disturbed by the chairs outside of immigration division 1 as I could just walk in. The process overall was very very fast (though I totally forgot about proper dressing rules so had to run to find something to cover up my shoulders). I got 60 days extension even though I applied for the 30 days extention. Does this mean I am already on COVID extension or is this something new?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user visited the Chaengwattana immigration office for a tourist visa extension and received a 60-day extension instead of the anticipated 30 days. They are unsure whether this longer extension is due to a COVID-related provision or a mistake. Community comments discuss the implications of the stamp received, advising the user to confirm the nature of the extension with immigration authorities to avoid potential overstays and fines. It is noted that different immigration offices may have varying procedures, and clarification is crucial given current regulations.

I will go again to immigration next week to ask for clarification on my stamp and will update if this can be interesting for anyone else. I'm planning on staying beyond the 10th of october so want to make sure this will not be a problem (baffling to me that I might have to pay a fine for a mistake that they made ...)

UPDATE: went today to the immigration office (still almost no one at j counter went very smoothly) showed them my passport and asked if it was a mistake, they were very apologetic and corrected it to a 30 day extension, asked me if I wanted to do the 60 day COVID extension right away as well but told them I would come back when my 30 days expire. They already gave me all of the forms for the COVID extension for when Iโ€™ll come back

remember at this time the covid extension program stops on Sept 27th SO if you're going to go back to get a covid extension do it before then ๐Ÿ™‚

Yea no harm in checking! While it is a fairly streamlined system, we do hear reports of different regional offices handling things in different ways. As
@Benjamin *****
stated, in the end it is our responsibility to check it over once they are finished. So happy we have these groups to discuss these things. ๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

1. It is your passport, and your responsibility to confirm what is stamped.

2. IF they stamped you wrong, when you go to the immigration office next week, and if they discover it is their error, they will fix it for free

This appears to be the 60 day covid extension. Depending on how long you plan on remaining in the kingdom, you may want to go back and talk to them. If you KNOW you are leaving before 10OCT2021 then itโ€™s fine. But if you plan on trying to stay longer, the current 60 day extension window closes at the end of September as of now. It is highly possible with the current situation that they will renew it around September 28th as thatโ€™s when they typically announce them. Had you gotten the standard 30 day today, it would expire mid September. Then you could apply for an additional 60 days possibly carrying you out until mid November. Reading on here it seems like different offices handle things differently. My office here did 30 days, then I got a 60 day today as that expired. Good luck ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

The problem then is, why did they stamp him as a "tourist"?
Mehdi *****
What time did you go in?
Benjamin ******
@Mehdi ****
Shouldn't matter. They are only accepting people who have stamps that are expiring three business days or less
Mehdi *****
So if my stamp is expiring on Saturday, I can go in tomorrow right?
Benjamin ******
@Mehdi ****
Yes you can. Remember, that IS just for CW only

@Mehdi ****
Correct

I recommend going back to the immigration office and asking them to check the stamp. An extension of stay based on tourism is good for 30 days, so you'd be stamped until around September 11.

Sorry
@Benj****
, don't want to hijack this post, but is the extension stamp for e.g. 30 days, different from the 60 day 'covid extension' ? I mean besides the 60 days given to the OP ? I know it depends a bit of the imm office you have to go if they want you to do a regular 30 days extension first or one gives the 60 days 'covid extension' right away and sometimes a 'under consideration' first given. 'under consideration' you can see clearly, but I'm not aware of differences in extension stamps. What I see, my year extension stamp, looks the same. Thanks !!!

>but is the extension stamp for e.g. 30 days, different from the 60 day 'covid extension'

Yes it is. Next to the "Extension of stay" stamp they usually stamp or write the reason for the extension (i.e. Retirement, Tourist, Married, COVID-19, etc). On the side of his extension it says "tourist", which is good for 30 days. HOWEVER, his stamp is good for 60 days.

The question becomes "what is it"?

IF it's a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19, he will be fine, because the immigration officer used the wrong stamp (it happens). BUT... CW usually does not go to a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 WITHOUT first giving a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism.

IF it's a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism, and they stamped the dates wrong, AND he leaves on October 10, he will be overstay for 30 days, which will be a 15,000 THB fine when he leaves (30* 500 THB a day).

It is free to get the stamp corrected.
