Is TM.30 reporting necessary for a tourist visa extension in Thailand?

I’ve tried researching this and have found conflicting information.

Are immigration bothered about TM.30 reporting when on a tourist visa?

I know it SHOULD be done and it’s a requirement for all visa types but I’ve read about it not really being monitored for tourist visas. I understand they’re asking for this regarding the Covid extension but I am asking with regard to a normal 30 day extension for a 60 day tourist visa. I have been staying in hotels for a few weeks so the reporting would have been done, but now with more restrictions coming I will be staying at a friends place for a while and also during the time I plan to extend and would probably use that address on the extension paperwork.

Anyone have any info/advice?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The TM.30 reporting is technically required for all visa types in Thailand, including tourist visas. Although some users report it may not be heavily monitored for tourists, it’s advisable to register the TM.30, especially if staying at a friend’s place. Failing to do so can result in fines for your friend. It’s suggested to ensure your friend submits the TM.30 online or to obtain proof from your previous hotel stay to accompany your visa extension application.

The onus is on the property owner, ie hotel/resort/landlord etc to file the TM30, however you wont get the 30 day extention without one. Apply for your extention before you checkout of the hotel.

If you’re still at a hotel then ask them for a print screen of the TM30 they filed for you. Use that with your application. Technically your friend should file a new one for you, but just saying....

Do online

My advice is simple. Get your friend to register. Otherwise your friend will get fined and will bring a bad start to your stay there when they have to cough up a fine of 2000 baht and his/her name on their list which if they do this again the fine gets bigger.

All it takes is one person to snitch and an immigration officer may just decide to turn up.

Yes just have your friend do it online that’s what my wife did

Technically yes, it must be done. You might be OK. But, if any questions arise, it could cause issues ... and the friend you're staying with is the one who's responsible.
