TLDR : Answer Summary
A remote worker considering the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) for Thailand can apply as long as they are employed by a company that pays them from abroad. The application should clearly state their remote work situation and include supporting documents such as a confirmation letter from their employer and proof of income. It is noted that stopping freelance work during the visa period shouldn't affect the validity of the visa, as the initial approval is based on current employment status.

Hi Priscilla, yes it’s definitely possible as long as you’re employed remotely and paid overseas. Many applicants are in similar situations—remote workers, freelancers, or consultants working with clients abroad.

If your DTV is approved, you are allowed to enter and stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry. You don’t need to remain actively freelancing the entire time. The key is that your initial application should reflect that you are currently working remotely and have income from outside Thailand.

Do make sure you include a letter from your company confirming that you are allowed to work remotely from any location, along with a short introduction letter, your employment docs, and income proof when applying.

Hi Priscilla,

Why would it not be doable? They pay you in France, it means that you have a business registration, right?

With the current rules and the way they are enforced, nothing happens if you stop freelancing before the expiry date of your visa, as long as you don't try to apply for an extension of stay beyond the 180-day stamp you get when entering.

With the current rules the use of the visa has to stop when the required remote work not longer exists, but the way it is enforced at the moment, the risk is very low you get halted getting into the country.

Personally I do not expect very much checks on remote employment, soft power activity and even more likely the 500K are candidates to be checked more often.

But a change in rules is not necessary to change the enforcement of the rules

I agree with most of what you said, but there is no rule stating that you must stop use of the DTV visa if your remote work ends.

I am not sure about that, when the job stops, it is not workcation anymore and the purpose of stay does not correspond with the visa type anymore. Thailand is very keen about having a visa type for every purpose of stay, therefore the enormous amount of different visa types.

Reality is, at this time, there's NO indication of Thai Immigration requiring proof of your activity for which you received the DTV visa for, as of the original issue date, if you are leaving Thailand on or before the end of the 180 days and seeking to re-enter to get a NEW 180 day stamp.

YES, local Thai Immigration Officers are asking for ongoing proof of your DTV activity when you apply for the 180 day extension inside Thailand.

Will any of the requirements change?

It's anyone's Guess 😉

I read aone stories from people who had to show they still work for the company, but I don't know if they are reliable. On the other hand, with the current requirements IO can ask for proof, because you have a visa for workcation and when that proves to be not a reason for the visit, IO can reject the entry. It will not happen often, maybe never, but I think it is good to realize they have those rights. People not abusing the visa have nothing to fear.

do you mean that if the dtv is approved i can just come in and out of thailand within the 180 days without pb. Even if i dont freelance anymore 10 months later ?

At the moment, yes. Things change quickly and often in Thailand, so nobody knows for sure if it will remain the same during the next 5 years.

Even if it does change, I do not think it will be systematic. It's too complicated and time consuming for them to implement a check on every single person entering on a DTV. However, they could start checking more carefully some people entering by air, especially those who do not travel a lot and basically use their DTV to "reside" in Thailand with a short trip out of the country every 6 months.
