Hey guys, I am planning to move to thailand as a digital nomad and still deciding where to live. Here are my thoughts below:

* First thing first, I don't wanna live in Bangkok. It's so chaotic for me

* I wanna live by the sea

* I don't wanna live in a super small place, also not really huge city as well

So, I thought Pattaya would be nice choice, what are your opinions?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the user's desire to move to Thailand as a digital nomad, seeking a coastal location that isn't chaotic like Bangkok. Various commenters recommend different places, emphasizing alternatives to Pattaya, such as Krabi, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, and Jomtien, each offering a unique atmosphere and amenities suitable for expats. While Pattaya has its supporters, many caution against its chaotic reputation and suggest quieter locations with a friendly environment, accessibility, and good facilities.

We just spent around 6 weeks in Pattaya. Our first time. I absolutely love Pattaya & Jomtien. Jomtien is quiter & it is so easy to get down into pattaya . Been back in Costa Rica 2 weeks now. I have never been a city Gal. I currently live on a mountain in the jungle, over the Pacific Ocean. My morning alarm clock is howler monkey's. Not horns and motorbikes. I love living where i am. But i am now seriously thinking about spending six months here and six months in pattaya. As a home base for six months whilst i do some more exploring. Plus Pattaya is easy Commute to Bangkok. Always some event going on. We stayed at a few different locations around Pattaya & Jomtien. The base on 2nd road, central and convenient to everything, was our favorite spot.

You probably want AoNang in Krabi, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, or Phuket. You could probably get away without your own transportation in AoNang, but really the rest, you will want your own transportation.
Joe ******
Pattaya is just a cheesy tourist place. If you really want to see and experience Thailand go and explore. Find yourself the place that suits you.

Surprisingly I find Bkk more quiet than Pattaya. It's called "sin city" for a reason lol I feel there are more things to do in Bangkok as well.

In my country I lived in the city and would use the beach/tourist areas as little getaways so I do the same here in bkk.

Not too sure if you are aware, you can take a taxi to Pattaya from bkk for about 1000 - 1400 baht or bus for about 100 baht, it's only about 2.5 hrs drive.

I would suggest it's best to come here and look for yourself and if you want to be by the sea where you can actually swim in nice clean water, I'd consider chonburi or down south in Phuket. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions 🙂

Pattaya is by the sea. So are many of the places that have been recommended. I would suggest a place like Kanchanaburi.
Divya **********
Songkhla and Hat Yai in the south are also a good option. But you won't find many tourists here and not many people will speak English here. Can be difficult making or finding friends and can be lonely in the long run. But it has nice beaches and is quite with all the modern amenities that you would need. Prices are cheap and the south Thailand cuisines are delicious.
Tyler *******
The islands will be too “small town” I think, but Phuket is nice because it will have everything you need but not so chaotic if you live a few KM from the city center
Scott *********
Look for yourself not Facebook
Nick *******
Pattaya is not a huge city but it’s certainly very big especially if you include Jomtien. It’s inexpensive but dirty, sea that I wouldn’t ever swim in and full of the most undesirables you never want to meet. Phuket has many locations that not too big or small but be prepared to pay the price for its proximity to all its surrounding beauty. Samui is a beautiful island but too many pot heads there who’ve watched The Beach too many times and trying to ‘find themselves’ still. Hua Hin definitely worth a look, a little on the quieter side than all previously mentioned but by far the most sensible option. Never been Krabi in 16 years visiting and 2 years of living here so can’t comment there. All this just my opinion so best is to try them all and see what fits for you. Good luck.
Tony *********
If you are a nomad why would you want to stay in one place? Moving from place to place is the whole point of being a nomad.

Pattaya and Jomtien are very similar as they are next to each other and the main attraction is the bar girl scene with a lot of sex tourists. I wouldn't swim in the sea there either.

Hua Hin is a nicer place IMO with cleaner beaches, but the population is mainly retired expats.

Phuket has a bit of everything including a lovely old town and nice beaches.

Krabi is lovely, but I think it would get boring quickly if you lived there and the main resort area gets very busy in high season.

Koh Samui has a young vibe and nice beaches, so it could be a good choice for you.

Places like Samui, Krabi and Phuket are much more expensive than Pattaya/Jomtien/Hua Hin, if that is a consideration.

As others have stated, travel around and see where you like.

Hua hin is well worth checking out, much more laid back than Pattaya and better beaches too, It can be whatever you want it to be.

Jomtien - 10-15 minutes from Pattaya on the coast but more chilled. And ignore all the negative comments about Pattaya, not everyone (including me) comes here for the bars, booze & girls. There are also many great restaurants and some regular pubs & bars and there are even families with children that come here for a vacation.
Jonnie *******
@Mark *******
my response was nothing to do with bars,, haven’t been in a bar there in 3 years and even then it was to watch the footy, traffic is chaotic, I stay 40 mins outside Pattaya and I doubt I go there once a month, only time Pattaya wasn’t chaotic was during covid.
Mark ********
@Jonnie ******
I wasn't responding to you.
Jonnie *******
@Mark *******
“ignore all the negative comments” ? Mine was negative, just clarifying my stance was not bar related
Jonnie *******
Pattaya similarly chaotic in my opinion, traffic a nightmare at times, Rayong or Hua Hin, or more peaceful options but still sufficiently built up for shopping and night scene to an extent, Banchang, Sattahip or koh Chang

Lots of very good condos for rent by the month. Excellent price with Jim's and rooftops swimming pools. Amazing coffee shops some with very good food.Others just different coffees and comfortable environments. Just about every food culture you will crave , you can find. Both inexpensive restaurants and upscale amazing dining experiences. Really love the rooftop bar ,especially Sky Bar 21 . Beautiful views of the beach and ocean. Amazing temples and Pagodas. Fantastic beach with well developed sidewalks . Cheep delicious local beers. I could go on and on.

Rayong is quiet and has beautiful beaches. Not touristic and you never see youth apart from really young with family. Because of its location it's easy (If you desired) to taxi to Pattaya or get to Bangkok. With it's huge tranquil beach front youll find many photo opportunities if your into that type of thing. Alternatively there's Korat which doesn't have the beaches but makes up for it with many water parks for fishing and eating out, Malls and some amazing markets (save one). It's style is slightly Western with familiar coffee shops littered around the centre with lots of museums, galleries and some fascinating history. There's a few falang but most will be teachers and there's the odd bar that opens until pub hours but no loud music or nightclubs. Korat is said to be the 'new Bangkok' and with its growing development and aeroplane restaurants Korat tries to be unique. I've lived in both and would recommend Rayong for a retiree and Korat for someone whom likes a little hustle bustle and chilling in coffee shops. Good luck

I recommend Bang Saen or Ang Sila in Chonburi, have Bang Saen beach, the first beach from Bangkok before Pattaya. Just 45 mins from Bangkok Airport and 45 mins to Pattaya. Have Burapha University there, so have lot of yummy food and nice cafes around and cheap. Have many local markets (seafood, vegetable, ready to eat food, etc.). Have good private hospitals same as in Bangkok (Samitivej Hospital). Have big shopping mall also - Central Chonburi or Central Sriracha, normally I just go to Bangkok for shopping, just 1 hour drive, no crazy traffic jam). This area you will see lot of teenage and working people, not dark side as Pattaya.

Pattaya is full of bar girls. Also a lot of older western men. It's not a positive scene. The beach is more of a promenade. I would suggest you take a look. Hey... It might be just what you want.. If you're a man. Thailand is a big friendly country. It's busy everywhere now. Koh panghan was our favourite place for many years but like everywhere, it's changing.

I'm in Chanuman mostly. Speak only basic Thai. Just enough to get by. Just barely. Actually where I went wrong is the first 22 years living in Thailand I worked offshore so learning Thai was never a priority. So the last 12 years after stop working, I hit the books pretty hard for about 3 years. Mostly learning by myself. Advice to others. If you are only part time in Thailand, try to prioritize learning the language. Don't make the same mistake I made.
Ken ***********
well the educated thais speak english ive been in and out of thailand and id rather live in an area of thailand that i dont need to be proficient speaking the language. so for the firsttimer i recommend stick around areas that you can enjoy without having to use a translator full time
