Hey guys! I’m visiting Bangkok in July for about 3 months. I’m a digital illustrator and my purpose is to go out on the weekends and have a good time, but I also want to stay in a somewhat quiet area where I can do my artwork during the week. An area close by a mall and shopping centers, groceries stores would be ideal for me. I might me asking for too much 😅 what area of Bangkok do you recommend I stay in? Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation centers around recommendations for quiet areas in Bangkok suitable for expats, particularly for someone looking to do artwork during the week while enjoying the city on weekends. Suggested locations include Thonburi, Udomsuk, Ari, Samut Prakan, and On Nut, all of which have nearby shopping options and good transport links. Additionally, there are cautions regarding the legalities of working remotely in Thailand without a work permit.

I really like Ari - definitely an arty place with fantastic cafes and restaurants. Doesn’t feel like the busy Bangkok and has a shopping Center too. It’s at the BTS so it’s easy to travel inside of Bangkok

A quiet are close to malls and shopping centers. Let me think... Try to find a condo with good insulation that keeps out the noises. Or something on a very high floor. 20+ or so. That also helps.

I would just caution you to not tell people that you are working if you come to Thailand. It's illegal to work in Thailand without a work permit. Yes even if you're working online/remotely for customers in another country, that's still work and still illegal.

So just don't mention it to anyone and you should be fine.

I’m a freelancer. Don’t work for any company designated company.

I tend to disagree with that idea. It's illegal to work in thailand without a work permit. Working for a (lets say USA) US company, for US customers, being paid in a US bank, is not working in Thailand even though you may be physically located here. It's no more working in Thailand just as someone here for a week and checking emails or trading stocks isn't working in Thailand either.

I'm not sure that immigration will agree if you make a Thai person angry and they report you to immigration for working illegally though

I can speak from my own experience with a very angry Thai ex girlfriend, she reported me to immigration, the embassy and the local police station for working online here for years without a work permit. The reaction of the officers was either laughing or said Mai pen Lai.

As long as you don't interfere with Thai business or economy you are not doing anything wrong.

As much as people talk about it, I've never heard a single incident of anyone being arrested/deported for working illegally in a manner as described above. Immigrations asked me on numerous occasions during my TV extensions what I do here, I always say "I work from my computer in the US," never once had a follow up question.

Some will cite the arrest of a few Americans in 2018 for 'teaching english online' in Chiang Mai, but that was totally different. They were working in a building in Chiang Mai, for a Thai company, teaching Thai students, and being paid in Thailand.
