Hello! I was hoping to spend my first year or two in Chiang Mai on an education visa, but I will be with an infant so want to go South for at least a couple months in burning season. Does anyone know if that's even possible, or if there are any ways that could happen visa-wise? My understanding is most education visas are one year and tied to a specific school...thank you!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the feasibility of spending time in southern Thailand during the burning season while holding an education visa tied to a school in Chiang Mai. Responses included advice on contacting a school for the necessary paperwork and clarifications regarding the duration and conditions of education visas, which are typically issued for shorter periods with options for extensions. Suggestions were also made about enrolling in a university for potentially longer visa durations, but concerns were raised about the increasing difficulty in obtaining back-to-back education visas. Overall, the conversation highlights the complexities of managing education visas in relation to personal circumstances, like having an infant.

Sounds like you have your game plan. The next step is contacting a school, enrolling, getting the paperwork and go getting the 90 day ED visa.

As far as how much time you can take off and still get extensions on an ED visa, well that's between you, the school and the Ministry of Education.

I don't think there's much more information that people can give you.

Good Luck (y)

BTW...Education visas are not issued for one year at a time. Usually start at three months with extensions. Check with reputable language school for guidance.

Back to back Ed Visas are getting difficult you obtain as well.

thank you! Yes that was my understanding and I have seen some schools with great reputations I was considering. Perhaps I will just start with language ED for 9 months, then leave and see if I can come back with a visa to study at Chiang Mai University...I was also considering CMU as an option but as I wanted to improve my Thai anyways the language Visa just seemed to be a better fit!

I don't mind teaching English and have done it before, and I do have close Thai friends who run NGOs, but felt that personal education may be the best way to start.

Once I've figured out the best plan of action then I need to do a lot more research on what the visa implications are for my kid and how to get that sorted....that was going to be a separate question one day but if you have any insight I am all ears!!

Thanks! I am exploring different options and then in a couple years hoping to go through iglu if it still is running, but not quite ready for that yet. May continue to ask questions as I sort out the best paths :)

Idea....If you enrolled in Chiang Mai University as a student earning Bachelors or Masters Degree...you may obtain a two to four years of Ed Visa as a student.

I think your plan is doomed to failure. Ed Visas back to back are becoming difficult to get.

And your plan to live in Thailand is also becoming a real challenge. Especially when you have a young child too.

Unless you get a job teaching or an assignment with legitimate NGO charity that provides you with a work permit...you need to rethink your plan.

You have asked similar questions recently in other posts.

Good luck.
