Hey guys,

I‘m coming to Thailand at 11/09. I want to get a visa on arrival and maybe switch it to an education visa in the first month. Is this possible without problems? I work online an I stay in Chiang Mai. If I don’t want to for learning Thai, I would want to stay for a few months.

What are your recommendations? Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking advice on obtaining a visa on arrival in Thailand and switching to an education visa within the first month of arrival. They work online and plan to stay in Chiang Mai, considering staying for a few months without attending Thai language school. Responses highlight that getting a visa on arrival is typically equivalent to visa exemption, allowing for a limited stay, and conversions to education visas require prior arrangements and valid documentation from a recognized school. Recommendations include obtaining a proper tourist visa prior to travel or during a visa run.

If you're a German citizen then you'll get a 30 day visa exempt stamp on arrival

Novembe 9, or September 11? I think what your propose is not possible. As I understand it there is not 'visa on arrival' what you get instead is Visa exempt -- mean no visa. To do the ED visa (not erectile dysfunction visa), you need to convert a non-b visa- which needs to be obtained outside of Thailand before coming. I would recommend getting a proper Tourist Visa from your nearest Thai Embassy/Consulate before coming. However, if you're short on time and there is not an embassy/consulate near by you can come and go to Lao to get a proper visa. Also if your plan is to be in Thailand less than 60 days - the visa exempt (on arrival) can be extended 30 days (30 days + 30 days = 60 days total). You will need to fact check according to your nationality - but i think that's accurate

@Timo Klingl yes -- you NEED TO GET IT FROM OUTSIDE of Thailand. If you come to on visa exempt (pseudo visa on arrival) - you will need to leave Thailand to get the proper visa to be converted. Save yourself the hassle get the proper visa before you come.

that’s what I get in Thailand? Can’t get it before I arrive...

I think you can come with the visa exempt - but I believe it can not be converted to ED visa. Those - I believe, have to be regular visa from consulate

I‘m German but I live in Spain (Mallorca) for 3 years. Coming next week, so Visa on arrival is not an option?? Afterwards I think I could change it to an ED...

Hey, what’s your nationality?

Do you really mean visa on arrival? Or rather Visa exemption? Anyways, if you plan to get an education visa you would have to find a school. They will then provide the documents. With those documents you can go to e.g. Vientiane and get the ED visa there. You will have to extend the visa every 60-90 days. At immigration they might test your Thai skills. So if you don’t plan to go to school, please don’t abuse this visa. Better go and get a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (gives you up to 9 months of stay with borderbounces every 60-90 days) in your country of residence or a Single Entry Tourist Visa (allows a stay of 60 days with option to extend by 30 more days) and then make a visa run to a nearby embassy / consulate for another one.

How long many months do you wanna stay here?

Oh, and don’t mention anything about working in Thailand, if you don’t have a work permit.

sure, I didn’t think I could learn a whole language in a few months... but it should be enough to get some basic understanding
