It's coming to the time of year where I need to apply for my one year extension based on marriage to a Thai National. This coming year I unfortunately can't show 400k in my bank account prior to my application, but I maybe able to apply showing an income of at least an average of 40k a month over a year. If this money is all shown coming from abroad in to my Thai bank account does it need to be at least 40k a month, or could it be 60k one month and 30k the next with the total accumulation over a year coming to 400k or more over a one year cycle? Also, is PayPal acceptable evidence of income to my or my wife's Thai bank account? Any known knowledge to either of these questions would be much appreciated prior to my application, thank you kindly in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a one-year extension based on marriage to a Thai national, the applicant inquires about showing an income of 40,000 THB per month versus a total accumulation of 400,000 THB over a year. The response clarifies that funds must be transferred monthly into the applicant's own Thai bank account, not in the wife's account, and that PayPal is not considered acceptable evidence unless it qualifies as an international transfer.

okay I think we beat this horse to death. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Check with your immigration office and see what they say. Good luck,

nope can't go in your wifes account, can't be from paypal (unless that codes as an international transfer) it has to be a minimum of 40K baht a month transferred into a thai bank account in your name only from abroad each month, every month for the preceding 12 months before you apply for your extension.

now before anyone chimes in I know that the police order stating monthly income when used for a year extension based on marriage says an average of 40K baht a month BUT I have never seen nor heard of anyone getting an approval using monthly transfers when the transfer amount was below 40K baht each month every month for the previous 12 months.

All you can do
@Karl *******
is go with your thai wife BEFORE you need to apply for the extension, talk to your immigration office and see what they say.

I met a guy in immigration who had an annual pension. He was getting ready to fight it out and said last year he succeeded but only after seeing the boss.. so it is possible to average out the income...with a fight.

which immigration office, and was it for extension of stay based on marriage?

It was Jomtien last month. I dont know his circumstances but he had accumulated paperwork to prove the meaning behind the Thai regulations and his pension source.

i think he wasn't using averaging for a year extension based on marriage but instead was trying to use monthly income by international transfers of over 65K baht a month to get a year extension based on retirement.

Jomtien STRONGLY suggests people use the bank money method (even though monthly income is totally allowable as long as every transfer for the previous 12 months was over 65K baht)

definitely an annual not monthly payments. He even explained that saving the cost of monthly payments was important to him. However he was behind me in the queue so I dont know how his claim this year was treated.

am I right in thinking to prove earned income of 40k a month you would need to be registered for tax etc and have a work permit? This seems distinct from the transfering in from overseas option?

@John *********
income inside the country has to be legally acquired so you'd be on a work permit, show that you're getting thai withholding take out, etc. Otherwise it's monthly transfers from oversease

has the OP said where he's from (I may have missed it)..? If not US/UK/Oz then he also has the option of an embassy letter.

unfortunately that's not an option, as I'm from the U.K. Thanks for the thought though.

Fun fuct: 5 times 0 THB, then 240k, then 5 times 0 THB, then again 240k: it is average 40k a month past 12 months.

thank you for the quick response. I needed to use my wife's account as I was unable to set my own bank account up, as PayPal Thailand hasn't accepted new customers for a long time now. I guess there is little chance this could be thrashed out at my local immigration office between myself and an immigration officer?
