TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, hotels are legally required to file a TM30 form for their guests without charging a substantial fee. While some hotels might ask for a small printing fee, typically around 5-10 baht, any significant charges (like 200 baht mentioned by one user) are seen as inappropriate or a scam. There is confusion among expats, with some insisting that hotels don't have to provide a copy of the TM30 after filing, yet they are responsible for its registration with immigration, which may require guests to show it during visa processes. Experiences vary, but the general consensus is that charging for the TM30 issuance is not acceptable.

I have never ever been charged for a TM30 card in 33 years of going to Thailand. It must be a scam of some kind.

There the ones who need to comply with the law so charging you is a scam & a Rip off

A friend of mine had exactly this problem recently. He went to immigration with a hotel business card, a recipt of his payment and the booking confirmation. He got his extension without any problem. It is then up to the local immigration authorities to how they proceed.

I've never been charged but it is a money making opportunity so im not surprised

They have to do it legally, but despite some of the other comments, there's no law that says they can't charge an administration fee for processing it, just like any other paperwork filed with Immigration. If it was illegal to charge a fee to file paperwork with immigration - physically or electronically, visa agents would be in all sorts of trouble.

Never been charged for tm30 printout when requested in 25 years of visiting but would be happy to pay 10 baht for one no more
I think you misunderstood me. The hotel is legally responsible for filing the TM30 with immigration not giving it to the guest. If they don't I was suggesting maybe going to the police or immigration to force the hotel to do its duty.
I don't know and have never had the problem. Maybe go to the local police station or to immigration maybe. I do know friends with resorts who have been audited for compliance.

my understanding (which could well be wrong) is the landlord/ hotel etc us legally obliged to register you but not to print out the TM30. Im sure a lot of hotel owners in my home country would see the money making opportunity for printed copies and charge.
they have to provide it to you also, as when dealing with immigration you have to prove (in hard copy) its been done.
It's kind of a mess, most tourists never need to use it but for those extending or purchasing (bikes cars whatever) have to be able to produce it.
They do not look it up for you, as is 🇹🇭 is paper heavy almost all immigration applications require a hard copy of it.

No, never happened to me. They are required to do it by law but I don't know if there are any laws about charging a fee. I know some larger hotels can be fee happy.

Absolutely not.
They are obliged by law and by threat of revocation of their business license.
The only additional thing is to print out their filing.
And the point is that many aren't legally hotels. Yes, though it is true that it is an obligation on hosts in general but an obligation that unlicensed hotels will be particularly unwilling to action. In fact the charges that everyone is concerned about are probably more likely to put you off asking for copy TM30 than as an income stream. It would be a pretty poor income stream, meaning how likely is it that a hotel guest will ask for a copy TM30? Surely, it must be close to zero, simply not usual.

And I got my TM 30s from all 3 hotels I asked with no problem and the friend I stayed with the other time just needed a little help online.
depends on how many long stay guests the hotel has. The new rules most immigration offices are pushing mean anyone wanting a 30 day extension to stay on in Thailand needs a TM30 copy. Some ex-pats in condos and apartments being let by some private landlords get told stay in a hotel for the night to get the TM30 for your 90 day report.
I've needed a TM30 for immigration 4 times out of 5 stays since covid.

Even staying in a privat home, the owner of the house has to file a TM30, so legal hotel or not make no difference.

It's a legal requirement for hotels to file a TM30 for you. The only justifiable thing they could ever charge you for would be 5baht for printing it out for you. Anything else is a scam. Just ask them to email it you or something and you'll print it yourself.
