TLDR : Answer Summary
The community largely supports obtaining a Non-O visa based on marriage for those working abroad every other month, citing benefits such as the peace of mind it provides and the convenience of having a year-long, multi-entry visa allowing 90-day stays in Thailand with each entry. Several comments discuss travel logistics and consulate access, emphasizing preparation for applying during holidays as Thai consulates may be closed.

I'd still weigh in and say that the fly and ride programs offered by Air Asia or Nok Air are the least troublesome and work like clockwork. Unfortunately neither of those plans gets you to Mukdahan soon enough so you can cross into Lao and make it to the thai consulate in time to turn in your paperwork on the day you get there :/ They BOTH have return flights that work out to get your passport, get back to thailand and get to the pick up point on time though

Going to Mukdahan / Savannakhet from the Bkk area the most common route is Don Muang by air to Ubon Rachathani, then a taxi to the bus station then by van or bus to Mukdahan - then on to the bridge.

- I took the taxi by choice ...

There is a transfer service from Ubon airport to Mukdahan, no need to take the 5km journey to the bus station

To mee it looks better to fly to sakon nakon then take the 4 hour trip to savannakhet.

Or fly to Ubon and take the 2 hour 15 minite transfer to Mukdahan

The AirAsia ticket to Mukdahan flies to Nakhon Phanom. The AirAsia minibus is parked out front and is a 90 minute transfer. Drops off/picks up at the Grand Hotel, Mukdahan. If staying , I would recommend here , 800 baht & good size rooms with usual mod cons. Did it last month, made the journey simple and didn't have to worry about missing the pick up

OR use one of the fly-n-ride options from Air Asia or Nok Air that lug you to Mukdahan.

For peace of mind I would have to say YES.

yep, it's FAR better for you to get a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa because you will get stamped in for 90 days every time you enter for a whole year..
