I am an American coming to Thailand married to a Thai. I apply for a 90 day visiting family type O visa before coming every year. Can I apply for a retirement visa while on the current visa when I arrive in Thailand? Yes I have a bank account and the money has been there for a year. I am just questioning whether that is allowed while on the visiting family through marriage visa.
Answer summary
An American expat married to a Thai citizen is considering whether they can apply for a retirement visa while on a 90-day visiting family (Non-O) visa upon arriving in Thailand. They have an established bank account with sufficient funds. The discussion reveals that the initial extension of stay must align with the reason for the Non-O visa issued, typically requiring adherence to marriage criteria for the first extension. Some comments advise starting with a 90-day Non-O visa based on age and subsequently applying for an extension based on retirement if financial conditions are met.

agency? Just go to the immigration office and ask if you can do what you are thinking. They will give you the answers, the checklist and the forms. done. I have a non O and just do the annual extensions....using retirement as the reason. Some Offices have asked me why I don't switch to "Marriage". I guess the amount required in the bank is (marriage nonO) 400 thousand. However, some people have posted that immigration will do home visits and the paperwork is a bit more. Whatever. I just wire 65 thousand a month and keep records and do the retirement extensions. No questions asked, no home checkups, no financial snafu's on holding the right amount in an account for 13 months or whatever.

If you want to do a "retirement" visa/extension.

Start with a 90 day non-o based on being over 50.

NOT marriage.

Then when in Thailand transfer the required 800k and after it has seasoned 2 months then apply for the 1 yr extension.

If you're already committed to the O marriage get the extension for the same and then after that you can change reason to retired. That's what I did when I saw the relationship going South.

So your wife is still in the US, why then apply for NON-O visiting thai family instead of NON-O retired before you travel to Thailand? You are not visiting your wife since she is in the US.

And I advice against using an agent paying extra money and then be tied to them until you leave and apply by yourself

OP
Maria Fredriksson I am traveling to Thailand from the United States and I do not know if my wife is going to be able to come over. I am going to be there for a 150 days. Last year i got a visa from the US. For visiting a Thai family through marriage and then I received a 60 day extension. It was very easy. The problem with that is, my wife has to be there. For the extension so I need to cover the extra 60 days. I don't really want to leave the country and come back.

you can only use the immigration office that serves the area where you live and where the responsible person has filed a TM30

Bernard Rouhaud what are you talking about? Agents dont pay people to promote them. ~ Other people here have given the same advice, i.e. an Agent can be useful, because they know the system.

Apply for a marriage extension. Takes longer and paper work can challenge the blood pressure or use an agent. They can sort the application if you have the cash seasoned for a nominal fee.

Todd Capron he isn't facing any hurdles. He gets the non+o in his own country. Which he's done before. But based on being over 50. Then pays 1,900 tbt to extend by 12 months.

Todd Capron just a hell of a lot easier & my wife is Thai.. too much beuractic BS for me & worth the money 💰!

The 1st extension of stay should be for the same purpose as the 90 day Non-O visa is issued so instead of getting it based on marriage get it based on being over 50 instead

I am not a visa agent and I'd suggest you don't need one for the Thai Privilege visa anyway. Just contact the Thai Privilege people directly

the mandatory insurance is the problem I'm 65.

@Ken ******
There's no mandatory insurance for the 90 day Non-O visa or any extensions based on it. Don't confuse it with the 12 month Non-OA visa which does require insurance.

Ken Balko there is no mandatory health insurance if you are applying for a non immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age. This is a 90 day visa, you can apply for it in your own country, enter Thailand on it, get stamped in for 90 days then during that period if you have 800K baht in your thai bank accout that has been there untouched for 2 months you can apply for a one year extension of stay based on being over 50 years of age (some people call this a retirement visa). The requirement for health insurance only applies if you are applying for a non immigrant OA visa in your own country using proof of 800K baht which you can keep in your own country and don't need to deposit anything in a Thai bank account

Dianne Lee thank you. That was correct. It was an oa visa i need to just apply for the 90 day retirement. Thank you
Graham ******

No, your first 12 month extension of stay (not a visa) must be for the same reason that your Non-O was issued
