Is a border run ok for the required 180 day exit on DTV?
Answer summary
Yes, a border run is generally acceptable for meeting the 180-day exit requirement on a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) in Thailand. Participants in the discussion share that as long as the visa holder is not misusing the visa and adheres to the intent of the DTV, which requires travel outside of Thailand for a period, a simple border run should suffice. Some users suggest using experienced border run services for a seamless experience, especially at certain borders where scrutiny may vary. Others emphasize that the process should be straightforward for holders of valid visas.

It does not matter which country's immigration system we are talking about, the rule always is, you must act consistent with the intent of the visa. DTV is a digital nomad visa, it is not for people who act like it is a permanent visa. DTV is not meant to allow holders to stay permanently in Thailand. It is meant for people who do things like spend about 3 months in one place, then spend at least 2 days in another place. If you stay in Thailand 11 months a year, but every 3 months take overseas vacations you are probably fine, as that is close to being a nomad.

I’d personally do a 3 day 2 night minication

For a lot of passports if you go to Laos it’s $30(฿1,000) for a 30 day visa…so the frugal me wants to get my money out of it and not just a 2 hour lunch

But that’s just me

Yes. Border runs are only an issue if you are juggling tourist visas, which you arent. Same day border hop should be fine.

If same day border run is fine depends also on the border.

Legally their is no reason why a same day return should not be OK, but some borders don't like or need tea money.

The fact they don't like can result in denial for some unclear reason or extensive checks, so when you want to try without experienced company, at least comply to all requirements and have al up to date documents ready.

P.S. DTV is also a tourist visa...

Of course. Your not abusing visa free entry periods and you have a valid multiple entry visa. You might need to pay the border fee (i imagine that varies if so) ...il probably be doing a land border crossing next time as i worry about ear issues on planes after the malaysia trip.

Strongly suggest you use an experienced border run service company... They will take you to get the new 180 day stamp, with same day return. They pre-clear your exit and reentry into Thailand.

It is as simple and easy as I say for the vast majority of people. This group seems dedicated to amplifying scare stories.

Have you done very short border runs on DTV? No questions asked at the gate?

Dispossessed_flipflop REALITY IS that the DVT visa holders are reported of being questioned by Thai Immigration Officers on some land border crossings and on reentry. I wish it was as simple and easy as you say.

Sure, I was aware of services for people looking to avoid scrutiny when they were abusing the visa-free entry system, but with valid visas I’m not sure what service we would need.

But hey, if people want to pay other people to book their bus tickets for them, God bless.

Dispossessed_flipflop there are border run and visa run service companies in Thailand which offer their services. They are not Thai visa agents. It's a HUGE business.

And they know what borders are friendly for the same day return to Thailand for their passengers. They prearrange your reentry.

I’ve done both. We have legitimate visas. We’re not gaming the system. Why would we need to pay anyone to smooth over our entry into the country? Maybe I seem obtuse but I genuinely don’t know what service you are talking about. A travel agent?

I’ve left the country dozens of times. I genuinely don’t know what service you think people need to buy a ticket, leave and come back when you already have a valid visa.

Buddy, you are here to be awkward and argumentative. You know this. I know this. You’re lonely and need attention. I get it.

Anyways, my question is genuine. If you already have a valid visa, why would you need a service to exit/enter the country? What service is being provided?

You buy a return ticket, you leave, you come back. That’s it. What am I missing?

It's either that or apply for an in-country DTV extension for a further 180 days. But you already knew that didn't you?
