Just a heads up for anyone planning a same-day border run between Thailand and Laos:

# Same-day re-entry is no longer automatically allowed ( DTV ).

When leaving Thailand, we were sent into a separate room ( Re-entry office ) where the officer asked how many days we planned to stay in Laos and when we intended to return to Thailand.

In my case, I honestly said that we would be back within around 2 hours. The officer then explained that this is no longer generally accepted, and that people are now expected to spend 2–3 days in Laos as “tourism/vacation” before re-entering Thailand.

Luckily, I was with my partner, who explained that we have a newborn baby at home. After discussing it, the supervisor eventually approved our re-entry request.

*Then, when I came back around 45 minutes later, the immigration officer didn’t ask me for a single document — no DTV e-visa, no TDAC, not even a hello 😂*

So just be aware: same-day re-entry ( DTV ) can now be refused if you do not have a valid reason.

Date : 22.05.2026
Answer summary
Same-day border runs between Thailand and Laos have become stricter, with immigration officers now expecting travelers to spend at least 2-3 days in Laos for tourism before re-entering Thailand. This policy change has led to re-entry requests being denied if not supported by a valid reason, as experienced by a user who faced questioning on their return. Various comments from the community suggest that while some borders may allow same-day re-entry, it is highly situational and could depend on the specific border and immigration officer. There are indications that compliance may vary widely, and those seeking to avoid complications are advised to plan for longer stays.

Yeah when I go I'm make sure I go for period of time, I don't think same day bounces for anything are going down well at the moment. It's not always disallowed but it only takes one pissed off I.C.O to make it difficult. It's about continuous living patterns on a non-continuous vis. They do not like it. Good to cool it off time to time.

While many borders allow a same day return, especially on a multiple entry visa, I would not recommend it and have never recommended doing this since the beginning.

The only border where this was generally not an issue is Mae Sot, due to the 1 day pass that Myawaddy immigration grants. However, that border has mostly been closed to foreigners since Covid and it remains to be seen whether 1. It will ever reopen to foreigners and 2. If it does, whether it changes the system.

When the border is properly open, it's always possible to use a visa to enter Myanmar, which invites less scrutiny than using a one day pass did. Foreigners from certain countries, notably Vietnam, have never been allowed by Thai immigration to bounce over the Myawaddy. Not even back in 2014 for example.

Anonymous participant 198 Straightforward enough if you own your vehicle. Very routine practice as you'll see at the border when you get there.

There is nothing new about this. Posted at the Ban Huak and Chiang Khong border crossings is a notice that you must spend 2 nights away if you're on visa exempt and you may be subject to various checks and required to show a number of documents if you're on a DTV to come back.

However, I suspect this is only asked for if you do a same day bounce, especially if you max out your 180 day allowance.

It probably won't be asked for if you spend several days outside the country.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
You will NOT be asked this question if you present to Thai immigration with a car and the relevant documents since no one drives their vehicle across to Laos and comes back the same day.

I always cross to Laos in my own car and usually for several days (typically a minimum of 2 nights but the average is 5 days). I've never been questioned. Actually, immigration is always straightforward, especially upon exiting. Customs sometimes asks some weird questions but I get through quickly there as well.

I did it 6 months ago. I parked my car on the thai side of Chiang Khong Vehicle Border, went to Laos for 1h, then went back to Thailand. I had no problem with my DTV.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
Pierre Busnel Which is not the same as taking your car across. If you only drive to the border, it's the same as using a bus. You managed to do a same day border run despite there being a sign up at Chiang Khong warning of the need to show all your documents when returning to Thailand. This isn't a requirement if you spend some time in Laos before returning.

You were lucky and good to know it all went well for you, but they seem to be cracking down on same day border runs with DTVs.

I recently did this border run at Nong Khai and my experience was similar. At the border exit you are directed to a side office where it says 'Re-entry permit' The IO supervisor asked how long I would be staying in Laos and I said 3 days at which she nodded and smiled approvingly. On my return I was again directed to a side office where the IO supervisor stamped me in without any questions. I strongly suspect this is a genuine post. I don't think there is any new rule but this is just a local policy decision.

Not sure the tea money thing is a good idea. As a last resort, you offer it (but you could be threatened if you do) so it's best to talk about it in indirect terms and then only if it looks like you might be denied entry otherwise and have exhausted all your other options. Generally, it won't go that far and on a DTV it's highly unlikely.

a few simple facts are:

No law against border bounce.

IO decides about entry and is free to see it as unintended use.

Visa run companies grease the wheels for flawless passing immigration in and out.

With these facts in mind everybody can make a decision and calculate risk of strategy.

A few possibilities are:

Just buy appropriate visa for your purpose.

Use experienced visa service for border run.

Plan a longer stay outside.

Don't wait till almost 180 days.

And last if the ones before don't work, have some tea money for IO when you do border bounce on your own, even if it might be risky.

Some people may have obligations or responsibilities that make it difficult to leave the country for just a few hours without proper planning.

If you're considering doing an easy same-day re-entry with a DTV, based on my recent experience, it’s not something I would really rely on anymore. It’s probably safer to plan for a 2–3 day trip instead, to avoid any potential issues or stress at immigration.

I personally went there expecting that a same-day re-entry would be possible, because many people in this group have said that it works without problems. That’s exactly why I wanted to update my post — so people can make their decisions knowing the current situation and what may actually happen at the border.

@Christopher **********
I've read posts from DTV holders who are Burmese and Indian citizens who've faced some issues on re-entry, partly because....drumroll please...they're Indian or Burmese.

Thai immigration is more likely to suspect abuse if you're a national of these two countries (and many other developing countries) compared with a westerner, Japanese or Singaporean national holding a DTV.

One Indian guy on a DTV struggled to be allowed permission to exit for Laos at Nong Khai on a same day border run.

it's abuse when someone is leaving and coming straight back to chase a new visa-exempt entry. There is no abuse when someone holds a multi-entry visa, which is what the DTV is.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Duncan ******
This depends on how your definition of abuse is.

It certainly is technically not illegal on a multi entry visa to do a border bounce, nor is it illegal to do that on visa exempt.

But since it is also not the intended use and the behaviour only is to circumvent the intentions of the visa or visa exempt, an IO might see it as abuse.

You can see it in a similar way as constructions made for foreigners to own land what is forbidden by Thai law.

Allthough those costructions might be legal in itself, judges just consider them illegal when it is obvious the only purpose of such a construction is circumventing rules.

Traveling to a border, paying for a visa of another country and then immediately returning also is a construction only meant to circumvent that you should leave the country and just milking a next stay stamp.

In this there is technically no difference between visa exempt and DTV.

There is no limit on the number of entries you can do on visa exempt, so you can consider it just like multi entry.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
RadiantCamel1017 When I just do some shopping across the border that should be allowed, and on a extension of a non-o it just cannot be considered a border

run.

Also when the current stamp by far is not expired, it should be easy to see it is not a border run.

But because border runners exist, the rest of the people get restrictions.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
@Luit ****************
Probably not, but you can still be questioned and there is an assumption when you show up at the border (on any visa) that you might be there to do a border run. It's at that point that you need to make it clear to immigration what visa you're on. They will assume you're a border runner until you prove them wrong.

Someone who arrives with their luggage / a car and their documents will not be questioned because immigration can see they're going for several days at least.

Border runners come without luggage.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
RadiantCamel1017 With a 1 year extension, you have to pay for the re-entry permit and have nothing to gain with the same day return, so IO would not see it as unintended use of a visa.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
@Luit ****************
He's right. If you go to the border and are nowhere near the 180 day limit and have a record of never (or only rarely) having been close to the limit you should be OK.

That said, the proper way of using a multiple entry visa of any sort is to spend some time outside the country.

Even someone on a 1 year retirement or marriage visa would be looked at funny if they cross the border and come back the same day.

It's not a problem to do so but it's best to spend at least a night or two away.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Lachlan *********
Each entry is subject to judgement of IO, just like with visa exempt an IO can see a borderrun as something not intended by the system.

Expiry date of the visa has nothing to do with it.

Most times it is not an issue, but things just might change, borderruns on visa exempt also were not an issue, but now they are.

if it’s an abuse why does the Thai government allow for so many Visa Run businesses? You see many chartered vans rolling to the borders every day, all filled with people solely in them for that express purpose, and it’s a whole industry unto itself.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Blake ******
It is difficult for Thai government to forbid driving vans to the border.

What those companies do to get everything going easy at the border might not be legal, but is difficult to enforce, because a lot of people have profits.

Visa agents having marriage and retirement visa approved without applicants having the deposit also cannot be legal, but happens...
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
@Luit ****************
Only SOME border crossings play this game though. Stricter ones won't accept bribes from visa run companies and thus aren't used by them.

When the border was open (and I assume once it reopens it will be similar), Aranyaprathet was absolutely no go for same day border runs. Visa run companies wouldn't go there. I noticed they started using the nearby Ban Khao Din border shortly before the Thai-Cambodian conflict closed the borders. However, the Ban Laem and Ban Pakkard borders, long under the control of the Thai military (hence why there are additional document requirements to take out a Thai registered vehicle there) were the two crossings favored by visa run companies.

Phu Nam Ron in Kanchanaburi (currently closed to everyone since 2020) is another border favored by visa run companies. Many a visa run company hauling illegal workers from Laos, Vietnam and sometimes Cambodia would use this border every 30 (or 60 days after receiving an extension of stay) or 14 days in the case of Cambodian nationals to get stamped out and back in again.

All these people are working in Thailand illegally without work permits but the visa run service would simply pay off immigration to look the other way.

At the Lao and Malaysian borders, there are specific border checkpoints which visa run vans use for the same reason.
