Is a bank letter required for a marriage visa application if I deposited cash into my Thai bank account?

Hello,

I deposited 400,000 THB in my Thai bank account as security deposit for marriage visa. However, this deposit was in cash THB upon opening the bank account.

I am now seeing the following requirement on another website:

"Bank letter stating that the money had been deposited to the account from an overseas source for not less than 2 months."

Is this true? The visa application will be rejected in this case, as I deposited in cash?

Thanks for your response 🙏🏼

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement of a bank letter stating the source of funds for a marriage visa in Thailand primarily depends on the local immigration office's policies. Generally, if the funds were deposited in cash, it may not negatively affect your application, especially if the amount has been maintained for at least two months. However, practices can vary by region, and it's advisable to check directly with your local immigration office for specific requirements.

Hi. May I ask how and where you opened your bank account please. I understand they're a lot stricter with bank account opening now.

I opened it with Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri). Currently on ED Visa and was no issue of opening a bank account with them. Did it in Central Phuket.

Likely to depend on which province and immigration office you are using. Some want proof, others don't.

I did not have to show source of funds and I got my extension in April. You'll be fine.

for the marriage visa there is no minimum requirement once the visa is approved. It can go down to zero, as long as it's back up to 400k 2 months prior to apply for the next extension.

chiang mai is where I've gotten mine and they have not once cared about where the money came from or what the account value was outside of those 2 months. Are you talking about the retirement visa extension?

I don't think they really care on a marriage visa. It is only mainly for retirement visas.

No one ever asked where the money came from for me. I used the Ubon office for my initial extension and BKK for my second neither cared.

Generally that's only a requirement for converting to a retirement visa inside of Thailand. For marriage visa and extensions it's not normally required to show the funds came from overseas. You'll need to confirm with your local immigration office though as they each have their own requirements.

Check with your immigration office... They're the ones applying these rules.

it's the same for the retirement visa. Some immigration offices require the funds come from abroad and others don't. I suspect these 2 visas endure the same protocol in the same offices.

no. Most offices require proof it's from overseas for conversion to retirement. Most do not require proof it's from overseas for marriage. Any office that doesn't follow those are the unusual ones.

The government has the identical official stance for both visas in terms of provenances of sums, as clearly stated here

The immigration offices that don't apply this rule, probably don't care to apply it for both. After all, there is zero reason to have different regulations.
