If I have a non-O visa based on marriage, how long is my new extension valid if I travel abroad for several months?

Question: I have a non-o visa (based on marriage to a Thai national). I have just renewed my visa (will pick it up this month). If I get a re-entry permit and travel to the UK for a long time (like 6 or 7 months), would the visa still be valid for a year? Or would it still just be valid until September 2025?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Non-O visa based on marriage is an extension rather than a visa and remains valid for a year after it is renewed. If you obtain a re-entry permit after renewing your extension, you can travel for long periods (like 6 or 7 months). However, while you are outside of Thailand, the validity of your extension still counts down, and your re-entry will be marked until the extension stamp expires in September 2025.

Okay, let's dial in your errant terminology πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

You applied for a NEW yearly "extension of stay" (it's not a visa) πŸ™‚ You are now on the "under consideration" stamp and will go back to the office and get the year extension inked in when that stamp runs out

After you get that year extension inked in you buy a re-entry permit (which will be good for as long as your extension stamp).

You can leave the country for how ever long you want to, and when you come back you will get stamped in until your extension stamp expires (so if that's Sept 2025, that's what you get stamped in for)

The extension runs down whether you're in the country or not and leaving the country on a re-entry permit and coming back in doesn't add any time to that stamp.

sincerest apologies for my mistake, good sir - your edification is most appreciated πŸ§πŸ™ƒ

Seriously, though, thank you for answering my question! Very useful information. I’m also considering going back to the UK for more than a year, so in that case I wouldn’t bother with the re-entry permit. I would just let the visa *extension* expire and apply for a new visa for my return.

Thank you! πŸ˜ŠπŸ™

yep, if you're going to be out until after your extension expires don't even waste the money on re-entry, and just get a new 90 day Non-O visa before you come here OR come back in free stamp and start over inside the country

Safe travels πŸ™‚
