Hey everyone - especially the Perpetual Travellers among you!

I keep reading that people needed to provide tax statements during the application. How do you handle this if you haven't been a tax resident anywhere during the last couple of years? Any personal experiences welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š Thanks!!!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the challenges faced by individuals applying for a visa in Thailand without a tax residency. Participants share their experiences regarding varying requirements for tax statements in different countries, noting that while some countries like the UK and the US ask for tax returns, others like Cambodia and Laos do not. Some members highlight personal experiences in being accepted for visa applications without providing tax statements, emphasizing that documentation requirements can differ widely by country.

Has anyone else done workcation in Cambodia and can confirm no tax returns needed? Especially interested in online in Cambodia

I told them I hadn't been living in the UK for the past few years so I don't have a tax return and it was accepted

Most western countries would ask especially if your application is freelancer or workcation.

Cambodia was soo easy. No tax, nothing. Just 500k in bank and passport - work contract - proof of stay- thats it.

perfect. Thankis for the information. Cambodia would be a great option; haven't been there in a couple of years.

Normally you pay tax in the country you receive your money in

, not exactly. You pay taxes in the country you're a tax resident in. Or, if you're from the US or Ethiopia, you pay taxes based on nationality. There is a whole "science" around this. Google Perpetual Traveller+taxes if you want to learn more about how it's done.

sadly it doesn't work like that. I'm not tax resident in the UK but I have to pay UK tax as that's where my income is. I am tax resident in Thailand but I don't have to pay tax in Thailand as I have no income in Thailand, nor do I remit any income to Thailand.

if your income is from property or a uk busines then yes, but not say from investments held in a UK brokerage for example.

I think I read the same about Taiwan. Not sure about Cambodia, Laos or Indonesia. But I would like to stay in the area, if possible.

Cambodia, Jakarta, Taipei, Yangon, Laos, Manilla are great options. There are legit reasons to not even have a tax return so you should not be worried about your non-tax resident status..
Simon **********
Uk asked aswell.
Greg ********
It is only Vietnam where I have seen they are asking for evidence of tax returns. Just try a country where they do not ask.

The UK asks for a tax return when requesting further documentation.

Ah OK. I should have known as 2 pals sent their company tax returns. Not personal though as far as I know.
Andi ***********
@Greg *******
Yeah, not personal it is just the way the embassy chooses to verify applications. Taipei told me they do not look at tax returns.

I do have that, no problem. I just haven't been a tax resident anywhere for the last 3,5 years.

That is ok, many embassies do not ask for them. Jakarta is great option too.
