TLDR : Answer Summary
The viability of living on a monthly income of $2000 in Thailand heavily depends on lifestyle choices and location. While some expats can live comfortably on this amount outside major cities, particularly in areas like Chiang Mai or Isan, living in downtown Bangkok may only cover basic expenses, such as rent and utilities. Commentary from other users suggests varying standards of living: single individuals or those willing to live more frugally can manage quite well, while families and individuals with higher lifestyles may require more. Factors such as rent, social activities, and personal habits significantly influence how far the budget can stretch.

Baht, us$, Aus$.€, GBP ETC ETC ETC
James **************
I was living in chonburi city on £500 a month all in.
David ********
I live comfortably on less than half of that.
Stephen **********
I have a good meal for 45 to 50 baht a day from the street fenders
Frank *******
Depends on where in Thailand. $2000 isn't enough for Bangkok.
Albert ********
Keep your rent low. Plenty of places for less than 10k baht a month. You can still have a meal for less than 200 baht. You can save money if your careful.Good luck.
Steen **********
@Albert *******
sure 9500 Bath a Mounth plus Electrik Many Hotel in Central Bangkok
Ricky ************
@Albert *******
yes indeed! Hop across Thailand renting a few weeks here and there! Sounds like a cool life!
Sam *********
Even someone with a relatively high spending lifestyle would do alright with $2,000 a month
Sam *********
Must all live in big cities. $700 a month is comfortable in the backcountry areas of Isan, at least for me..Bangkok is a different animal..
Andy ***********
@S**
- not really

@Sam ********
I disagree.
Coburn ******************
Depends....2000 Bahts/mo= below poverty in Thai. $2000/mo=bearly get by in up country in Thailand but in BKK that is just bearly enough to pay for a decent apartment.
Burnard ************
@Vinit *******
I am assuming he meant USD

The average salary of a full-time working Thai in the Provinces is ~300 USD/month.

The average full-time working Thai in Bangkok makes ~1000 USD/month

Decent Room in Bangkok can be rented for less than $300 including utilities. A decent one-bedroom apartment in BKK can be rented for 500-600 USD a month.
Coburn ******************
@Burnard ***********
Well that's really depends on which part of town right? BKK is a huge city and in order to get around you need to live near BTS or MRT Mass transit stations. Those areas the rent will be higher. Of course you can find cheap rent but for foreigner I am sure you want to be in the heart of the action and not in the far suburbs.
Burnard ************
@Vinit *******
My 5000 Baht Room was near BTS on the same side of the river as Icon Siam (before it was built)

You assume to much. That is why you pay to much. Get a Thai friend who knows enough English that they can translate for you.

You will save a lot of money.

Saying to me "Depends on what part of town" is like saying 'Depends on if you want to pay to much.'

If you put a little effort into research, you won't be just another ripped-off foreigner.

It bothers me, a little, when Expats think a $2000/month income is necessary. Because you will get screwed if you think that. And the Government will make it law that foreigners earn more than that to live there even though Thais are lucky to Earn
***
of that. (Oh... what's that you say? They did make that a law?...Oh! Well then!)

if you dont drink and smoke or chase women 1000$ possible

if you drink and smoke 2000$ possible

if you drink and smoke and chase women 3000$ better…

ive watched so many budget videos on south east Asia and i think this sums it up well….

2000$ honestly can give you some travel opportunities throughout the month, and some splurging on food, and room with a/c……..

Spending money for better accomodation and other things that you consider luxury is not “throwing money away” - i would say your outlook is very narrow

It depends on how you want to live, where you live and what car you drive etc. Yes you can easily live on it and. Support a family most of my staff earn less than that and all do and own cars. If however you drive a new car and shop in villa market and live in house with a pool in Bangkok and eat delivery foods everyday with star bucks etc etc you won’t stand a chance it will be gone in a week.
Mark **********
These are always silly questions.It depends on the standard of living .If you live like the standard of average Thai then $300 to $600 per month is fine but if you want to live the standard of a middle class westerner then around 2.5k to 3k a month and a more luxurious life 4k to 5k plus .There no right amount and live the best with what you have , 2k is comfortable for many .
Nigel ********
Might last you hours in Pattaya, depends how good at Connect 4 you are?
Stéfan ********
A long way, especially if you live with Thai standards. You could easily live with half of that and go out frequently

2000 US, Euros, Baht, Yen, Pesos, Rubles, Rupiah??

1000.00 will go a very long way....

My rent, elec, water, internet and phone comes to 13,000 Bhat tops. Air con on most of the time. 2 bdrm house fenced in with big fr ok not porch, skooter and car paid for. Skooter to save in gas. Food is very cheap.
Bob ********
I lived like a king on €1000 a month, but then I don't drink or smoke...and owned my own apt./house.
Tobie *****
Depends on your currency. I assume you mean USD. It depends where you live and if you're single, a child or a family. Single its double, for a family, forget it.
Maxim ***********
it entirely depends on location and lifestyle. I don't think I ever spend more than 2k a month in Thailand and I've been living in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Isan. Usually closer to 1.5k USD. Rent and Food will determine a lot regarding that.
Corey *******
I was there when covid started, in koh lanta. $400 /month got you an ok beach front hotel with weekly cleaning and AC. You could cook your own food for less than $50/month if you want to live a bit frugal, but still get full. A bike rental was $30/month. Sounds like an amazing time. Nothing else really to spend money on then 😅
Sam *********
That's enough for urself in BKK but if u need a live-in partner and contribute to her family support, then u would need like an extra usd 1k.. I didn't live in BKK but I lived n worked in Manila with similar CoL standards....To be comfortable like a middle class local with a live-in, whom u would need to support 40k bhat a month if u wanted one, in a moderate metro apart, u need about USD 3K a month and still have some savings.... It all depends on if u want a live-in or not, whether u wanna live local middle class standards in pricey Bkk or in the outer regions.....U should be more specific with ur living standards???

ABSOLUTELY...

people who are questioning this are foolish. $500USD per week in southeast asia goes a long fricken way

From my research, that should be plenty for anywhere outside of downtown Bangkok.

Felix ******************************
Look, it's more than enough. People here with financial ineptitude will tell you otherwise because they dont know how to manage money.
Ross ********
As long as you don't need/have a car....pretty darn well
Dan **********
You can rent fully furnished 3 bedroom homes in Chiang Mai now for less than 15,000 + electric + water + internet + motorbike = 20,000 baht.... Food can be 100 baht one day for fresh veg and chicken from the market or 600 baht the next for steak at a resto...2,000 USD is plenty if you're in Nakhon anywhere but you'll have to give a chunk to the girlfriend. 3000 is perfect with some travel and massage thrown in.
Sammy *******
and depending on exchange rate, it might make the minimum 65,000 baht foreign transfer requirement.
Ricky ************
Put $1000 aside for fixed costs like rent, utilities. Then you can work out a decent lifestyle, nowhere close to fancy, but just fine. You can save for a few months, then use the savings for some traveling across Thailand or to some neighboring countries. But in my opinion $3000/month would have been perfect!
Luc ************
@Ricky ***********
in Isaan we eat for 100baht/day. Fixed costs 3000baht. 🤷‍♂️
Ricky ************
@Luc ***********
well he did not mention where he would like to live. My estimate and recommendation is for living comfortably in downtown Bangkok. My son is currently living comfortably in Asok area in Bangkok with a $2000/month budget. Sure if he lives in the jungle in Thailand he might not even spend 100baht a day! Location is definitely decisive!
Tod *********
Totally depends on if you take cheap street whores or go to places with higher priced ones 😛

Cheap street whores to be found accross Ratchadamnean Rd opposite to Khao San. This is a public service annluncement. Many thx

Expenses living in Bangkok, I’d say that presuming you enjoy an average standard of living in Europe or the US, Canada or Australia, you will need the following amount(s) to maintain that standard in Thailand:

Single male/female in Bangkok – ฿50,000

Couple in Bangkok – ฿75,000

Couple with a baby under 2 years old in Bangkok – ฿80,000

Couple with the child over 2 years old in Bangkok – ฿85,000 (not including school fees)

This includes rent, food, Internet access, gym membership, and going out socializing once/twice a week.

If you plan on living upcountry somewhere, you may be able to shave as much as 30% off these amounts.

If you plan on living in Koh Samui or Phuket, then you can expect to spend about 10-15% less, depending on your drinking habits.

In my experience, you pay less rent on the islands, but eating can be a tad more expensive and you tend to spend more on socializing.

I haven’t lived in Chiang Mai for some time, but when I did I found rent to be about 25% cheaper than Bangkok. Cut and pasted from
****************************************************
Mark *************************
That is 60k - 68k baht per month. It is more than enough for necessities no matter which part of thailand you are in unless you are spending lavishly or want to live like a king, literally. With that type of money beers and ciggies everyday aint a problem. People get by with half of that amount, for a family of 4, easily. Just dont expect to eat waygu everyday.

Enough to have a better life here.

Andy ***********
Totally dependent on lifestyle … living in mid sukhumvit that would only pay the rent … but you could live on $2000 elsewhere, but it would not be a lavish life. Do you play golf ? Do you live a busy social life ?
Andy ***********
There is a huge variance in pricing even in mid sukhumvit - 18-25 k will get you a basic 2 bed older style condo without full facilities ie quality gym and pool - maintenance and grounds … as stated my building starts at 50k but nothing available and they rarely are … it is not BS at all …. You just do not know ….

And if you think you can't find great 1 bedrooms in that area for 25k bht or less , then you're crazy or a dam baller.
Andy ***********
@Mike ******
- i really have no idea about the lower priced market - or 1 any one bedroom apartment …. I just know what i know - and you seem it hard to believe that people spend 60 or 70k a month on accommodation but there are many that do …. As i am sure there are many that spend 25k but not for a “great” apartment but i suppose that is a matter of opinion. Maybe you take a photo of the 25k flat and i take a photo of my 90k flat and see how they compare
Mike *******
@Andy **********
sometimes bigger isn't always better lol. I've got nothing to show off by spending ready to much money on a 1 bedroom. I bet you drove a Ferrari in your past life too
Andy ***********
@Mike ******
- just a different lifestyle .. not showing off at all - no never drive flash cars just live within my means which is far from extravagant….
Andy ***********
not really - nothing under 50k per month in my building …. Mine is 90k…. Asking this question will always attract similar comments from low cost farangs. Not everyone lives the same here
