TLDR : Answer Summary
A 59-year-old UK citizen with a nest egg of approximately 120k and an annual pension of 17.8k THB can generally live comfortably in Thailand, especially if they manage their lifestyle wisely. Comments from the community suggest that this budget is sufficient for a decent quality of life, particularly in areas with a lower cost of living. However, concerns were raised about potential employment as a diving instructor due to work permit regulations, requiring foreigners to navigate legal requirements related to hiring and employment ratios with Thai nationals. It is highlighted that working on a retirement visa is not permissible; instead, a work visa is necessary for employment in Thailand. Overall, while living in Thailand can be affordable, careful planning around expenses and understanding visa requirements for work is crucial.

could be fine for now as long as you've got decent health insurance and are happy living a relatively simple life - whether the maths still works in 10 / 20 / 30 years is another matter (Thailand is still a developing country so it's likely to become much more expensive over time)

Check out this handy savings drawdown calculator available online. Add your uk pension at 67 and I would say you’ll be fine.I’ve just spent a year in Hua Hin and would say your budget is fine. Most day to day expenses are cheaper. My council tax and utility bills not including rent uk £500. Thailand £60.

if anybody you do not know calls you «buddy» and mentions «financial advisor» in the same sentence I would turn around, walk another way. I came here first time 46 yrs ago, alternated between 5 star hotels and giant per diems when working, and sleeping on dirt floors or wobbly wooden ones in jungle or Klong Thoey slum when out of business. Come and try it out, your hard-earned Baht are more than enough to keep you going, try to make some thai friends though, they´ll help you out when they understand that just like them you have limited resources. As for women? I dunno. Been living with the same one for more than 30 years and she treats me well. «I´ve go a women way up town, and she treats me well».

Reluctant to comment, as it will probably get deleted. Yes you can live comfortable on your pension if you don’t go crazy. Try pay it all to Wise or Revolut. Exchange and transfer at least 65k baht per month for 12 months. This will help with next years visa. Try get proof of your pension. This will help with your first retirement visa. As for bikes or scooters. Hire a small 125cc. Much safer.

Modest life in Bangkok but totally doable, *or* a very nice life in a smaller city with few expats if you're comfortable with that. (Think Buri Ram, not Hua Hin.) Or split the difference and go to Chiang Mai but then you've got poison air a few months a year. In any case I hope you like Thai food and/or cooking.

Don't touch your nest egg: it's not that much but you'll really need it if this doesn't work out and you have to go back to UK. Also: plan in advance for health insurance, for little things it's fine to pay as you go but you'll lose that nest egg real fast if you're hit by a moped and go to the private hospital uninsured.

As others have noted: watch out for the booze and the babes, either one can torpedo your budget before you realize what's happening. The good news is that with a little patience you can find a partner who carries her own weight (or his, whatever) and drinking like normal Thai people is actually pretty cheap. You just have to like highballs. :-)

You cannot work with a retirement visa. You can have a work visa but restricted to few jobs. But a bike? I wouldn't, it's dangerous in Thailand...but that's my view. The Thais could do with some good driving instruction however you may not be able too. The driving schools will not be to the standards you may expect and the fairness you may expect.

at 72 I got my bike liscence.

100% on computer test because I prepared well.

Failed last point on practical on a Friday....the examiner gave me a couple of tips re weight distribution. Practiced on the week end and passed 9 00 Monday.

Rode every day for 5 years.

Say one minor accident.

Never involved in accident. Felt far safer in Chiang Mai city traffic than I do driving a car in Australia.

My Thai friends gave me only two pieces of advice.

I. Forget about the traffic behind you, focus on traffic ahead and respond.

2. When yiu use your indicator move immediately.

Had to cross 4 lanes of traffic in approx 200m to get home.

Easy as pie.

The only aggressive drivers in Chian Mai were tourists and privilaged expats. Once you are in the traffic it is not as scary as it looks.

Just respect other drivers. Never saw a Thai driver exhibiting any road rage in 7 years.

90% of my driving was in inner city traffic.

Miss my Honda CLICK.

I showed them my Australian liscence, International Permission to Drive, My Police and Health Clearence and My certified address, and retirement visa. No thinks involved. They processed me for a driver's liscence, which I never used, and guided me through the bike liscence process.

Why are some people so negative.

I suggest you rent - do not buy as you will lose!

Budget for 10 - 15k baht per month on a condo. Don’t choose an area until you’ve traveled to a few places. Enjoy this travel around Thailand.

Enjoy Thai women - you don’t need a wife so soon!

Get a scooter or bike as it gives you mobility and is fun. Wear proper gear and get health insurance that covers riding motorcycles! Look at the fine print, ok!

Have fun

Then You have got food entertainment and travel

You also need to reserve money for regular bills (electricity, phone, internet, etc)

And then of course health insurance (not cheap at that age)

It goes fairly quickly

By travel I mean international flights (of course he can take a bus around Thailand)

Good luck, 59 is a good age in life to make a new move. Thailand can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. Also, as in most countries it also depends where you live and the associated lifestyle; if you just want to chill in rural Issan you will be relatively well off, in the posh parts of Bangkok you will struggle to have any quality of big city life.

if you want to work then do it you can change from Wp to retirement p later. Starting on retirement p means you have to leave the country and other complications to get a wp. Plus as lovely as Thailand is it’s better to be busy, meeting active people 🙂 Get decent health insurance that’s a cost that keeps going up. Many say rent don’t buy, but I’m happy with a small condo and to know my costs rather than gambling on rental increases which have surged in many areas the last 2,years. But like many say, costs will vary on location. Many retirees in Phuket, Khao Lak, Hua Hin, Chiangmai and Jomtien. Then many more scattered in rural areas.

I am an avid diver and have friends in the industry throughout SEA. It's very hard to hire a foreigner, with the job permit ratio. And farang instructors are plentiful... for those few available jobs. I've been diving at shops who have the same foreigners for years working there. Often the owner or part owners.

If a dive shop hires illegally, that high risk for them. Diving is a serious business where it's someone's life involved.

love diving too and it is serious business… I’m ex military with lots of buddies enjoying part time dive instructing around the world to fund adventures. Yes, for sure farang instructors are a dime a dozen. But as you can see, many companies find a way to hire them, whether perfectly legal or otherwise. And some of those guys wouldn’t be very concerned about being ‘perfectly legal’ also.

But the poster says he is q dive instructor and if living here, it’s a lot easier to be hired and sort out the work visa later

not sure about work permits for foreign divers. Although there are quite a few, a diving school will require to employ four Thais to be allowed to hire one foreigner. Not many diving schools hire foreigners, because they are already owned and run by foreigners, so why would they want to push their expenses over the limit (also regarding that during the rainy season, diving tours decline as the sight under water will blur). And employing Thais is tricky - if you cancel them, you are still required by law to pay 3 more months of wages

scooter is the Danish and English word for the German "motorroller", and the 160cc Honda PCX ist one most the most sought "scooters" for of Farang expats. this is obviously one of the many WRONG infos on Wikipedia, because before the introduction of automatic transmissions, chain or driving shaft scooters using a gearbox weren't classified as motorcycles but as scooters. YOU are much too young to know it all

cubic meters???

That is a huge engine, CC refers to Cubic Capacity of the volume of the engine, 350M??? Yeah I don’t think so…

Higher the CC more power output.

As for the PCX, it may be the most sold, I think the ADV 160 will replace that for Farrang, the ADV350 is a nimble bike and not as cumbersome as the Forza.

The ADV750 is great for highway touring.

The Honda NCX750 would be top pick to ride anyway in Thailand 🇹🇭 🙏🏽

this is not correct. CC stands for cubic centimetres. It’s the volume displacement by the motor. Therefore a 350 cc motorcycle displaces approximately 350 cubic centimetres. Cubic capacity is not the meaning of CC.

Insurance company calls it Cubic Capacity too…

Soooo guess we are both correct, yes I am a Fitter by trade and knew it to be what I believed was cubic centimetres…

I’m a motorcycle mechanic. Insurance companies make their own definitions. The manufacturers all use cubic centimetres. lol. What the insurance companies call it is mute.

fair enough, as I said as a Fitter I always knew it to be Cubic Centimetres or in the case or American made Cubic Inches

That’s your problem that you don’t recognize the same categories in driving licenses, and classification of vehicles as authorities.

When giving advice to others you should follow the same definitions as they are defined by authorities in international driving license categories, and even the Thai driving license categories.

And there you will not find any scooters mentioned.

you can get a Thai driving license within one day. Easy peasy when using an agency. Fully legal. And a Thai motorcycle license allows you to ride from 110 cubics to unlimited cubics. ONE motorcycle license for ALL
