How does the Prompt Pay system work for transferring money in Thailand?

Could someone please enlighten me regarding Prompt Pay?

My mobile banking app is broken for the next week. I needed to pay my rent. Bangkok bank seems to only allow transfer within their own bank when using iBanking. The only available option was Prompt Pay which I have never used before. The process on my end was very simple. All I had to do was to supply the receivers's phone number. I got an acknowledgement that it went through.

So my question is, how does the receiver get their money, given that I only entered a phone number? Is it somehow tied to a bank account?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Prompt Pay is a payment system in Thailand that allows users to transfer money using a linked phone number. In order for the receiver to receive their money, they must have previously linked their bank account to their mobile number through the Prompt Pay registration. The process is designed for instant transfers, so the money goes directly into the receiver's bank account as soon as the transaction is processed. Users noted that if their banking app is malfunctioning, there are alternative ways to initiate transfers, though limitations may exist depending on the app's functionality.

In addition to Promptpay, when you open the Bangkok Bank app, you can click "Transfers" then "Other Accounts" (the first option, above the Promptpay option), then select the recipient's bank and enter their account number.

as I said, I currently do not have access to my bank app. My I banking account is available but there was NO option to transfer to 3rd party accounts. It was there but would not allow me to select it. There used to be but now the only option is prompt pay.

M banking (app), of course allows it but M banking is broken for me until the end of the week.

sorry, just trying to help. How can a banking app be broken. The app is loading fine for me so it's not having any availability issues. Perhaps your phone is having an issue? Did you try updating the app, or uninstalling and reinstalling it?

I did a long thread on this subject

I got a new phone and when I tried to set it up I got an error about my phone number which displays a number that I don't know. I get sms all the time so that number works. Apparently there is some hidden number. I went to the bank (3 times). They submitted a phone number change which takes a week. Until that is completed, I have no access to the app My rent was due, so ...

the other thing is you can only have the App on one phone at a time(K bank anyway). My wife got a new phone and had to sit in the bank and have it removed from the old phone with the employee then installed and new copies of id supplied.

my old phone was factory reset for a trade-in. My issue is100% an incorrect phone number in the bank records.

Ah OK, didn't see your other post. Yes, number changes are ridiculously annoying. I had to do the same myself once with Bangkok Bank. They have to send the change to headquarters, and it also took me 3 tries before the change went through.

Yes, your payment will go directly into their connected bank account.

when you open a bank account you can choose to register promptpay with your phone number. That number is then linked to your account. That's why Promptpay works. You can't use the same number if you want to setup promptpay in another bank. I have Bangkok Bank with promptpay. When I opened an account in Krungsri I could not register Promptpay with the same number. When I checked the registration of my number I saw it was already registered in Bangkok Bank. A clever system. You could have used QR payment if the receiver had not registered PromptPay

It just goes to a random person, like a lottery. The Thais have all agreed this system.

They will get it instantly, assume they've received it

The receiver must have linked their bank account to their mobile phone number first before you can search for them under promptpay.

Receiver will get a notification to acknowledge the payment, their fone will be linked to prompt pay otherwise it would have gone through

@Kevin **********
no notification regarding acknowledge the payment - it is done immediately if the receiver has registered Promptpay and if he has not registered Promptpay then he can't receive a promptpay payment and the sender can not send money to him that way - he could then use QR instead

yes but on your own fone it will say transaction successful which would mean the other person does have it linked
