TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing issues transferring money to a Thai bank account using the Santander app, as it requires sort codes instead of the SWIFT codes provided by the landlord. Several comments suggest alternative solutions, with many recommending the use of Wise or other apps like Western Union and Revolut for easier and cheaper international transfers. It is noted that the Santander app only supports EU payments and that setting up international transfers may be better done through their banking website or via phone banking.
and you can only pay someone through the app you have paid before as you cannot set new payee’s up. It’s a bit backwards as apps go compared to other banks
The Santander app only supports EU payments. Contact their customer service but keep in mind that they maintain high exchange and transfer fees. I also suggest using Revolut or Wise to transfer. My recent revolut international transfer to Thailand arrived in minutes.
Every bank has a “transfer department”. Normally you have to ask a human to transfer you. That department may jn fact just do it for you and send you a link to authorize prior to execution.
I had a problem a few weeks ago and chase told me to speak to their “transfer department”. After being transferred over (no pun) I spoke to a person who took care of everything (sending to Cambodia) after I was striking out. Also they sent the confirmation number to my recipients email. The whole thing was quite lovely because I was really struggling and they untied all the knots effortlessly.
If you transfer money abroad direct from your bank you will get hammered with charges. I use Western Union app it's easy quick and cheap. To transfer £500 for example costs just £1.90.
It's very easy to transfer money between international banks.. all you need is the recipients name (as it appears on their bank account) and account number.. and the country/bank/branch they hold the account with.. you can look up the SWIFT code yourself.. every bank in the world has a unique SWIFT identifier.. though some have only an IBAN number you can use.. your banking app will call for the information it needs.. eg. Bangkok bank is BKKBTHBK.. and you will decide whether to pay all fees or just your own banks remitting fees.. meaning the recipient will pay for receiving the money their end.. I recently transferred money from UK to Thailand myself.. my bank charge was zero but recipient incurred charge of 200bht.. though Bangkok bank cap this at 500 bht per transaction.. the alternative is to simply withdraw the cash at a local atm and hand your landlord the cash.. unless you are already out of country of course. PS. You may not be on the correct feature in your app.. my Uk bank app asks me to choose between a 'transfer' which is to another Uk bank.. or an 'International transfer' for overseas banks.. if you are on the right one it wouldn't ask you for a sort code my friend!
Santander app is expecting to send to a European bank which is why it’s asking for sort codes. Thai banks don’t use them. You may have to go into a branch to bypass the app, or see if their website allows for international transfers using swift codes.
