I usually go to Thailand to visit my friend there every month, is there anyone who knows how to open a bank account in Thailand, so I can give the money to my friend there and use the promptpay?
P.s. I am using a tourist visa to enter Thailand .
Thank you very much for helping.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A British tourist in Thailand seeks guidance on opening a bank account to facilitate money transfers to a friend. However, several community members note that it is challenging to open a bank account on a tourist visa, often requiring proof of residency and an agent's assistance. Users suggest alternative money transfer methods and emphasize the importance of having a Thai partner or agent for navigating the banking process.
You need to apply for a three month visa first and open a bank account. Don’t get persuaded you need 50k worth do medical insurance to open account you don’t.
You need to put 800k in the bank account.
You need to put 400k if you have a marriage cert.
When I took to immigration they sent me to the bank to add another thousand, it needs to be over 800k.
When the three months are nearly up you will return for your years stamp. I got the bank statement the day before my appointment and on the day they sent me to get another statement as apparently the statement has to be on the same day you apply.
I did this with my Thai wife and everything was fine just be prepared for some waiting a allot of signatures.
When you get the year visa you have to check in every three months. I’ve been told this can now be done online but I haven’t looked.
I have been a member on here now for sometime and it’s amazing the conflicting info you can get.
I have also picked up that although all the rules are the same they do seem to be interpreted differently depending what province you are in.
My province is Udon.
I would never have been able to get everything right without a Thai to help unless you are fluent in Thai yourself I believe it’s important to have someone you trust with you.
You have to have an address in Thailand to open an account. Proof of that address, for me back in August 2023, was a contract (booking) from the hostel I was staying in. More recently the bank I wanted to open another account in, demanded a formal letter from Immigration giving my address. And you couldn't get that unless you had the owner confirm you live there and show the ownership documents. You also need your passport and visa. Or you use an agent and pay maybe 5,000-7,000 baht for them to open a bank account for you. If I did it again this is what I would do, just to avoid the frustration factor
I opened mine about 7 months ago at BBL and they told me I was lucky as the regulations were to tighten up next day. At the time I just needed my passport and an address. From all the conversations I’m seeing it appears they are starting to require a lot more. Likely related to tightening money laundering restrictions and the flood of dodgy Russian money coming into the country. Anything Russian is going to attract bank compliance departments
no they're not! I have a Bangkok Bank account and my local branch closed. I wanted to open an SCB account as they were next door but they wouldn't do it , even though my partner has an account there and I had an OA visa and the residential paperwork from immigration.
