How does the DTV visa process work with an expiring passport?

I’m applying for the DTV, but my passport (to be stamped, if visa is approved) expires in one year. How does that work, do you just get a new stamp in one of your quarterly visits to immigration? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a DTV visa with a passport that expires in one year, the process involves managing documentation properly. The DTV visa might not be stamped physically in your passport but is typically issued as a PDF file with a QR code. If you renew your passport before the visa application, the old passport is not needed. Ensure to carry both your old and new passports while your DTV visa remains valid, as it will be tied to the current passport.

Hello Miguel, where are you from? Your name sounds familiar. I am Portuguese living in Thailand since January and just got my DTV in Taipei, Taiwan. DM me if you think I can help. Best, Manuel

If you have a DTV visa whether a physical label in your passport or a PDF file sent visa the evisa system and you get a new passport then you just show both passports to enter. Show your visa either in the old passport or the PDF that references your old passport and you’ll get a stamp in your new passport to reflect the 180 days allowed.

If you get a new passport prior to applying for the visa then your old passport is irrelevant and not needed.

You do not get a physical visa in your passport. See Tod Daniel’s comment above

but the visa is registered on the (old) passport, which means you need to have both passports for the rest of the visa validity period

Carry both passports as your DTV will be associated with your current passport

You don't get a stamp, you get a PDF file with a QR code.

And once your passport expires you carry both the old and new ones until your visa expires.

this is the way !

You could just get a new passport. Then you won’t have to worry about it

@Peter *******
getting new passport before applying for visa is the best idea.

Well the DTV is a PDF file the consulate emails you

your passport doesn't get stamped when you do a 90 day report

and

you only get stamped in for 180 days when you show up here on a DTV

So I'd say between now and when your passport expires renew it 🙂

oh, that’s right, it’s an online application anyway. I just see so many people displaying theirs as if they’re a passport stamp that it didn’t even cross my mind! Thanks.

Many people do have a passport sticker visa. The DTV was released in July 2024 but the mandatory switch to e-visa wasn't until January 1st 2025. There were many embassies that did not make the switch until 6 months after the DTV was created.
