How do I transition from a Non-O visa to a marriage visa in Thailand, and is there a waiting time for approval?

Hi all,

Just confirming I’m on right the path here…

Looking at getting a marriage visa in the next few months.

Apply for a non o in Australia

Once in Thailand transfer to a marriage visa.

Now I fly in and out once a month. Is there a waiting time for approval and if so can I leave and re enter before it’s approved. Or is the marriage visa approved straight away

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process involves applying for a Non-O visa in Australia, which is a marriage visa for those married to a Thai citizen. After entering Thailand with the Non-O visa, you can then apply for an extension of stay by proving you have 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account for two months prior to application. The extension gives you a yearly marriage visa. You can apply for the extension at the immigration office with 30 days or less remaining on your Non-O visa, and you may leave and re-enter Thailand while your extension is under consideration, but you'll need to obtain a re-entry permit if you leave during this time.

The Non-O visa IS a "marriage visa" (meaning it's issued because you're married to a thai)

remember though you can only get a 90 day single entry Non-O visa based on marriage to a thai from the thai consulate in either Sydney or Canberra (depending on where you live in Oz) BOTH embassies have their processing time posted on their websites so check which one you use based on where you live and see what they have posted.

When you enter the country you get stamped in for 90 days, then you have to get the 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you can apply for the year "extension of stay" at the immigration office where you live for 1900baht.

You can apply for a yearly extension at most offices when you have 30 days or less left on your 90 day Non-O entry stamp. You apply, get a 30 day under consideration stamp and you go back after that 30 days to get the year extension inked in. <- THEN if you want to leave the country during that year you buy a re-entry permit

You apply thru this web portal

This shows WHERE you apply based on where you are in Oz

I just received my non-O Visa from Australia

My understanding is the Visa operates for 90 days from the date they issued it not when you enter into Thailand

I’m not 100% on this so any clarification would be appreciated

Hopefully your Non-O was based on being married to a Thai and not on being over 50 as your first Extension of Stay must be for the same reason as the initial Non-O was issued.

You are confusing two separate things

The validity of the VISA itself <- which for a single entry Non-O is 3 months from the date they issue it.

What that means is you have 3 months to ENTER thailand on that visa

AND

once you do you will get stamped in for 90 days (even if you entered the last day the visa itself was valid for you still get stamped in for the amount of time that visa gives you 🙂 )
