How can we secure a 60-day visa extension with an METV while in Ranong?

Hi there, again. We're waiting to hear if we can actually get our 60 days visa extension - we have an METV and are currently in Ranong. Waiting to hear back from immigration ( I rang them last week,at the request of our hotel for details etc). They said then that they couldn't see any problems but obviously needed to see our docs etc first. We're now trying to sort out travel arrangements for tomorrow morning, to go to immigration ( no appointment necessary) but we've just been told that they might only issue 30 days, which doesn't really help us and defeats the object of having an METV in the first instance. Should this be the case, does anyone know where we would need to go to in Malaysia to sort this out? I know we don't need a visa for Malaysia but where's the nearest point of entry from Ranong and do you have to make an appointment first? We need to leave Thailand by 29.01. Thank you once again for any advice or help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how to handle their METV visa extension from Ranong, as they've been informed they might only receive a 30-day extension instead of the expected 60 days. There's discussion about the possibility of a 'border bounce' to obtain a new entry stamp for 60 days by leaving Thailand and re-entering, specifically mentioning Myanmar as a convenient option from Ranong. Comments elaborate on the visa rules regarding the METV, the process for obtaining extensions, and the importance of carrying the physical METV document during re-entry.

If you are in Ranong, the easiest border for you to bounce is with Myanmar, easily done by boat and yes it is open.

I think the mix up is two fold

,

FIRST exiting/re-entering the country doesn't get you an "extension", it gets you a NEW entry stamp for 60 days just like the red one you got when you entered the country,

AND

you're not talking to any immigration person OR being taken to any immigration person when you border bounce 🙁

You're contracting with a service to take you to the border, get you stamped out of thailand, get you stamped in and out of another country and stamp back IN to thailand to get a new entry stamp for 60 days.

if you applied for the METV online before you came here (as in you got an email of the PDF file that is your visa) PRINT it out as that is your actual visa and you show that with your passport when you stamp back into the country.

No matter what the company you're dealing with says, when you enter the country on a valid METV you WILL get stamped in for 60 days, and the officers at passport control when you stamp in know this

To stay longer...a Land BORDER BOUNCE to leave Thailand and reenter Thailand, even on the same day, will get you a new 60 Day STAMP and that can be extended for an ADDED 30 days at your local Thai Immigration office.

thank you; I know that already,but I'm not convinced that they're going to give us the required 60 day stamp! I honestly thought it would be quite a simple process. Will wait and hear from the agent. Otherwise I think we'll just try our luck tomorrow morning....by going ourselves etc. That might work...

have a printed COPY of the METV to show the Thai Immigration Officer who greets you on re-entry into Thailand. That should make sure you are STAMPED in for 60 days. The Agent you mentioned MUST be either a Thai Immigration Officer or experienced border run service company that is taking you to do it Border Bounce. We don't allow any discussion of a Thai Visa Agent on the forum.

The METV multiple entry tourist visa is valid for Entry into Thailand for 6 MONTHS FROM THE DATE IT IS ISSUED.

With planning you can get Up to 9 months stay in Thailand with a few simple LAND BORDER BOUNCE entries...plan your trip to fit your stay using the METV.

that's what I'm trying to do, but if I only get 30 days in Myanmar , we'll still have to leave Thailand again...I think. Thank you 👍

There's NO 60 day extension of stay when you have a METV multiple entry tourist visa... The extension of stay is an ADDED 30 days at your local Thai Immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

THESE are the common found requirements for the 30 days tourism extension of stay...be sure to have a TM30 address registration on file with Thai Immigration.

EACH time you enter Thailand with a METV multiple entry tourist visa you are STAMPED in for 60 days...

AND..

You can get a 30 day extension of stay at your local Thai Immigration office.

Then you MUST leave Thailand and RE-ENTER Thailand if you want to stay longer.

that's what I thought/ understood. We arrived in November and extended at the end of December in Bluport, for 30 days. So we are now trying to leave Thailand ( go to Myanmar ) and re-enter to get stamped in for another 60 days. But it doesn't look like it's going to be possible at the moment... and I don't understand why.

@Julie *********
what is the date that your METV multiple entry tourist visa was ISSUED? Look at the METV Visa... it's valid for Entry into Thailand for 6 MONTHS FROM THE DATE IT was ISSUED...

Not 🚫 from the date you first entered Thailand.

you need to ask your local experienced land border run service company to take you to the Thai border cross and re-enter to get the New 60 Day STAMP.

I will do that now. Thank you.

Any local extension of your METV will be 30 days only.

METV gives you 60 days at each entry within the validity of your visa. Take a 30 days extension or leave the country, make a easy border bounce and return possible the same day.

Common advise for a border bounce. Take a visa agent. They are familiar with the border situation and make sure the bounce will run smooth.

that's what we're trying to do. But the agent has still not rung back. Just need to plan what to do next. Thank you for your help.

I believe you can do it yourself without the need for an agent

I thought so too, and was trying to arrange transport for early tomorrow for a taxi from our hotel to immigration . We were quoted the price of 2600 thb each for the whole service - taxi/ immigration / boat/ visa stamp but when I said that it had to be for 60 days, reception got the agent to ring me direct. I explained about the METV etc and have sent her pics of our passports. But I have heard nothing at all since and starting to think we need a plan B. I honestly thought I'd researched this thoroughly but beginning to think we're going to have to make an even longer drive to Malaysia. But we want to make sure we get to the right place and make an appointment if necessary. Thank you.

just leave and come back you need no agent with a METV get your 30 day extension then go and come back and repeat and do it one more time before the visa expires and you can stretch it almost 9 months

but we're here until the end of April,so still need to leave the country as we can only do one more 30 day extension back in Hua Hin. You're only allowed 2 per year I believe, although,as our last one was in December, technically this is now a new year ! I honestly don't know what to do for the best....but thank you for your help.

it's not a local extension . We're leaving Thailand, entering Myanmar then returning to Thailand and hopefully get another 60 days, which was what I thought happened with an METV.

@Julie *********
that’s what a METV is all about,…cross any boarder and you get new 60 days which can be topped with a 30 days extension at any immigration office in the country,…
Graham ******
@Julie *********
You said you spoke with Immigration not an agent. Immigration would tell you that an extension is 30 days but a new entry stamp would be 60 days. That is the options you have.
