What should I do if I mistakenly received a 30-day stamp instead of my tourist visa's 60-day entry?

Hey! So I applied for a tourist visa in Vientiane about 50 days ago. It was accepted, and everything I've ever read on the subject says you get a 2 month stay and then you can extend for 30 days. Great.

So I decide after 50 days to check and see when it expires exactly, so I can go for the extension and I find the stamp, which I stupidly never looked at, which says I have 30 days! 20 days less than now! I never thought to look since I thought the tourist visa was 60 days!

Who would be the best person to contact for this? Is this just a simple overstay? Is it up to the border's discretion to give the full 60 or remove days?

Could it be possible they gave me a visa exemption stamp time instead of a tourist visa stamp time or am I just clutching at straws here?

Also yes I know, I have since discovered the "check the stamp posts" I will duly check every stamp, even ones from previous visits and expired passports, from now on.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An individual applied for a tourist visa in Vientiane but discovered that instead of the expected 60-day stay, they were issued only a 30-day stamp upon entry to Thailand. The poster seeks advice on how to address this issue, whether it's a simple overstay, and the best contact for assistance. Responses suggest checking the visa sticker for status, clarifying whether the entry was by air or land, and outline options to remedy the situation, including potential visits to immigration offices or the original point of entry to correct the stamp.

Update for potentially concerned readers:

I slogged back to the Nong Khai border by train, since the only thing everyone I asked agreed on was that they could only change things like this at the original point of entry. Brought a translated letter to the re-entry permit room. Tried to be as respectful as possible. Everyoneโ€™s pessimism had me expecting the worst. A few people silently read the letter before one officer just said โ€˜okay mister!โ€™ Then he took a pen and a stamp and changed the date and entry type so that itโ€™s as if I entered on my tourist visa and not the exemption, thus giving me 60 days starting from my original entry 50 days ago. Then he let me leave, no fine or anything.

Maybe I got lucky but dreams do come true!

and on that note I think the O/P has enough info to figure out what course of action they decide to take..

We wish them good luck, (y)

well you're out nothing by TRYING to go to the Immigration office on Thursday when they open and see what happens. Worst they can say is you didn't get stamped in on that visa and that you are on overstay.

If that's the case you can clear that overstay, exit the country, re-enter the country and use that visa ๐Ÿ˜•

one more question, since you're the guru of this! Do you think it's better to wait until immigration is open again and handle things through that channel? Or go to the border asap and leave and try to re-enter? The whole reason I got a tourist visa in the first place was they told me at the border it was better than doing another exemption again. :(

Our "guru" is very humble, but I lack a word of gratitude for his detailed infos and thoughts on your stamp mess. Nobody expects you to worship him and kiss his feet.

uh, I didn't mean it sarcastically, he's obviously a great source of knowledge and a person I should be directing my questions towards. I wasn't trying to make a statement in any way. So, uh, yeah.

report back (or message me) and let us know how it eventually works out..

@Ian ******
that is for you to decide knowing that if you can't change the stamp at immigrations you're going to have racked up another 1500baht in overstay for the 3 days you're waiting for them to open on Thursday the 3rd

Whatever visa you have, you need to politely make it very visible and/or say what you've got. You can't just hand over your passport and play the "find my visa" lottery.

well at this point it was a new passport, there were two other stamps, two full page visas and they had me fill out a form where I had to put the number of the visa I had just received. This was a lottery that was hard to lose
Tod *********
@Ian ******
and yet you not only lost you didn't bother to see that you had a "losing ticket" for 50 days as well ๐Ÿ˜›

This has happened to me before but was actually entered into the system as 60 days - the immigration officer just made an admin error with the stamp.

I went back to the airport and he fixed the error in the passport.
Tod *********
@Tom ****
that happens quite a lot actually ๐Ÿ˜ฎ they enter in the system as the correct entry type but give you a bad stamp
Nick *******
It certainly sounds like you got a visa exemption at the border. 30 days. Perhaps the officer did not see your 60 day tourist visa. Good luck but best you get back to immigration immediately.

The way I see it the O/P has these choices

1 - IF they entered by AIR & the visa is struck thru, marked used; they were stamped in WRONG <- meaning they can get it fixed at the airport or ANY immigration office

However

2 - IF they entered by LAND & the visa is struck thru, marked used they were stamped in WRONG <- meaning they have to go to back to that border to get it corrected ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Now on the other hand; IF the visa isn't struck thru or marked used, they were stamped in on a regular 30 day visa exempt entry (เธœ.30).

3 - They can go to the immigration office pay the 10+K baht overstay, apply for the 30 day extension and get how ever many days are left on it (after subtracting the overstay days)

THEN they can make a plan to bounce out and back and activate that 60 day entry on the unused visa..

4 - They can go to the border, clear the overstay, stamp out of thailand, stamp in-&-out of another country and back into thailand using the tourist visa to enter getting a 60 day entry stamp (TR60)

5 - They can go to the airport, clear the overstay, stamp out, fly out and back in using the tourist visa to enter getting a 60 day entry stamp (TR60).

Those are the available options as I see it and it all depends on IF the visa sticker from Vientiane is marked used or not AND whether they entered by land or air..

Sincerely good luck with it ๐Ÿ˜•

Sorry for your predicament but as Tod always said check your stamp before you leave to make sure they give the correct stamp.
Tod *********
So you bought a tourist visa from the thai consulate in Vientiane, then entered thailand and NEVER bothered to look at the entry stamp for FIFTY days? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Here's how that works;

IF you flew in you can go back to the airport that stamped you in and get the stamp corrected.

BUT

IF you entered by LAND you have to go back to that land border crossing to get the stamp corrected.

Look at the visa sticker in your passport and see if it's struck thru and written or stamped USED.

Also look at the entry stamp you got and see if it says TR60 or เธœ.30 <- that's the free entry stamp code.. If it's เธœ.30 you didn't get in on a tourist visa and were stamped in on a 30 day free stamp meaning you are now on a 20+ day overstay.. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜•

So now you know what to do, if you flew in go back to the airport that stamped you in, where as if you crossed by land you go back there to get the stamp corrected.

Just so you're clear; if you show up at an immigration office for the 30 day extension and you're going to get fined 10K baht (20 day overstay X 500 baht a day) AND then you'd get only 10 days on that 30 day extension for 1900baht as that's all that's left after the overstay is deducted.

And all immigration offices are closed this week until Thursday the 3rd (but airports and land borders are open)

yup, after entering about 60 countries on hundreds of flights, I guess I developed a blind spot since I never had a stamp problem, I had the two month date on my calendar, and even finding the right stamp in my passport can be difficult. And I thought they had all the info digitally anyway!

So you're saying it's not good to go anywhere here in bkk? The only way to avoid an overstay is hoof it back to nong khai?
Ellie *******
@Ian ******
check and read well Tod's other comment on this post. You need to check your passport well for you to decide where you should go.

@Ellie ******
yeah, the visa is not struck through, and the stamp does not say TR. So this means nong khai won't fix the stamp and I can't get them to consider this my tourist visa stay? My only option is being charged with an overstay? That is... Unfortunate
