How does the Multi Entry Tourist visa (METV) work in Thailand?

Can anyone clarify the Multi Entry Tourist visa and how it works?

I understand you get 60 day and can extend 30 days. Do you then have a fly out to Vietnam for example, fly back in and get another 60 days + 30’day extension?

How many times can you do this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Multi Entry Tourist visa (METV) allows for unlimited entries into Thailand within a validity period of 6 months from the date of issue. Each entry provides a 60-day stay in Thailand, which can be extended by 30 days at immigration. Travelers need to exit Thailand and enter another country, such as Vietnam, before returning to reap the benefits of this visa. The only limitation on the number of entries corresponds to the number of pages available in the passport.

The METV is valid for 6 months from the day it is issued. You can enter Thailand an unlimited number of times within those 6 months, and each time you enter you will be stamped in for 60 days. You can extend this 60 days at immigration for another 30 days.

The only limit to the number of times you can enter is how many pages you have in your passport. If you enter the last day of the visa you'll get 60 days which you can extend for 30 days, getting almost 9 months out of it.

In between each use you need to stamp out of Thailand, stamp into another country, and then return.

thank you so much for clarifying, understood.

What are the options for visas after this, could you then apply for a another metv or single entry visa with the embassy and get another 90 days?

Just weighing up yearly options with ED visa etc. thanks

As Brandon has indicated, ask yourself "when does a tourist cease to be a tourist?". Thai immigration are a suspicious bunch, and they will naturally assume you are working in Thailand on successive tourist visas, especially if the duration between border hops is very short (some people just go to, for example, Nong Kai, step into Laos, get the entry and exit stamps, and then walk back into Thailand). They will almost certainly question two successive METVs if this process is observed.

You can always apply for another visa. That doesn't mean it will be approved.

If they see you've just spent 9 continuous months in Thailand, they may be hesitant to issue another tourist visa, whether it's single entry or multiple entry. They might happily issue it, they might ask you lots of questions, or they might reject. No real way to know.

You might also get questioned when you enter the country on a fresh visa after spending 9 months as well.
