TLDR : Answer Summary
If your Bangkok Bank account is frozen and you cannot travel back to the original branch where you opened the account, the only way to resolve the situation typically requires two visits to the branch, with some time in between visits. Many users have shared their experiences stating that they faced challenges with account freezes. To potentially recover your funds, options include demonstrating your legal residency status, providing evidence of legitimate transactions, and possibly escalating the issue through communication with the Bank of Thailand (BOT) if necessary. Some users suggest keeping strong ties through long-term visas or property ownership to reduce the likelihood of account issues.

I donโ€™t think this publicity is good for Thailand, by all means go after mule accounts with suspicious transactional activities but not every DTV holder! But itโ€™s Thailand only Thai logic exists.

What is Vietnam like, can tourists/remote workers open a bank account with debit card, online banking etc ?

The rules regarding bank accounts are tightening around the world. Thai banks have decided not to open bank accounts to those on tourist visas (which the DTV is), but those on long-term non-immigrant visas can do so
Henrik *****
Itโ€™s not the banks who have decided.

Itโ€™s a governmental decision, that banks have to follow.

Its happening the world over in some form or another! Not just bank accounts.

Its too much hard work deciphering who is/isnt/may or may not be good or bad. Its much easier to portray everyone as a baddie as far as the powers that be are concerned . . . which is where law abiding people lose their rights because of the scum the earth harbours

No warning. No access. No way to pay bills or even buy lunch.

Remitly โ†’ remitly.com

Hold THB or auto-convert from USD/EUR at real rates. Add to Apple Pay/Google Pay โ†’ works at stores that accept contactless Visa/Mastercard (not PromptPay QR)

Works at ATMs and most Visa/Mastercard terminals (some Big C stores, larger retailers). Note: Wise/Revolut cards donโ€™t work with Thailandโ€™s local PromptPay QR system, but they do work where contactless Visa/Mastercard is accepted.

Keep an Overseas Account Active

Donโ€™t close your home account. Link your Wise/Revolut card to spend in Thailand. Even if your local account freezes, youโ€™re still liquid.

Fintech Platforms

Use Wise, Payoneer, or Remitly for cross-border bill payments and transfers. Faster and cheaper than SWIFT.

Local Anchors

Property ownership, marriage visas, or long-term visas give stronger eligibility. Banks are far less likely to target these than tourist accounts.

Split Your Risk

Donโ€™t rely on one bank. Keep part overseas, part in fintech, part local. If one channel freezes, the others keep you going.

Ask the bank to release only the โ€œsuspicious portionโ€ of funds (per BOT guidance).

You have to visit the branch that you opened it.

You don't have to close it but it may be an option if they do not let you use it.
Cas **********
Yes, I had the same issue and went to the head office and insisted. After many no/ cannotโ€™s we managed to close the account there.
Anonymous ******************
I doubt. I've tried for years to close my own accounts using other branch and it was refused.
