TLDR : Answer Summary
The user and their spouse are currently on a 6-month multiple entry tourist visa and want to know how to convert it into a retirement visa. They have been informed that they need to change their tourist visa to a Non-O visa and then apply for the retirement visa after 90 days. Various comments discuss the cost of the Non-O visa application (2,000 Baht), the requirements for a retirement visa (proof of income or funds in a Thai bank), and suggest visiting the Chiang Rai immigration office for more information. An update indicates that Chiang Rai immigration does not process this visa change and that they need to go to Mae Sai immigration instead. One comment also suggests a potential workaround by border bouncing to get another 60-day stamp if time is tight.

If you don't have enough time left on your current entry stamp to get the in country 90 day Non-O visa because most offices want at least 15 days and some want 21 days left on your current stamp; since you're on a 6 month METV) just border bounce to get another 60 day stamp and then apply.

Good Luck (y)

He needs the visa first, than he can apply for an Extension of Stay.

It's a 90 day visa based on retirement, it's not difficult, but you must have proof on income I think 60,000 per month or 800,000 in a Thai bank for 30 days before you apply, for the extension, the 800,000 must be in a Thai bank for 60 days prior to application

If you are in the area, just visit them and ask for the hand out. To have them a few months early makes live easy to prepare.

Robert Lagas actually Robert there is, 30 days for the 90 day non 0 and 60 days for the extension, I just did it earlier this year

It is 65.000 Thb a month, certified by your Embassy or 800.000 Thb on bank account or a combination of both with the minimum of 800.000 Thb. For application of the Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age (called by many retirement visa) there is no time limit that the money has to be on the bank.

The cost to apply for the Non Immigrant O visa is 2.000 Thb. Best is to visit Chang Rai Immigration Office and ask for the hand out with requirements.
