I have a US passport. I have come to ChiangMai Intending to get a retirement visa. So far, I have gotten a residency certificate and bank account, and have 26 days left on my 30 day extension.

I understand that my next step is to get a 90 day non O, before applying for the long term, but I can’t find any information about how to do that from inside Thailand. Can someone give me a quick rundown?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a 90-day Non-O retirement visa in Chiang Mai as a US passport holder, you need to follow these steps: 1. Ensure you have at least 21 days left on your current visa stamp; otherwise, you may have to do a border run to get a new stamp. 2. If you're applying based on banked money, transfer 800,000 baht into your Thai bank account. For income from abroad, visit the US consulate in Chiang Mai to obtain an affidavit verifying your income of at least 65,000 baht per month. 3. Once you have the required documents, go to the Chiang Mai immigration office to apply for the 90-day Non-O visa, which will be processed within approximately 21 days. It is crucial to manage your current visa timeline carefully to avoid overstaying.

They won't even accept your application if you have less than 21 days left on your current stamp. I'd say make a border-bounce to the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma and get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp before you apply. They charge $10USD or 500baht to get stamped in and out of burma.

Then go apply for the 90 day Non-O visa.

Fun... what does it take to be admitted to Myanmar?

Alternatively, is there any chance for getting a second 30 day extension?

If you are using banked money you transfer in 800K baht into your thai bank account. If you are using the overseas income method you go to the US consulate in Chiang Mai and get an affidavit of income from abroad notary letter stating you get 65K baht a month in income.

Then you go to the Chiang Mai immigration office and apply for a 90 day non-O visa based on being over 50. It will go under consideration for 21 days I believe and then you go back to get the non-O visa and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport.

You're burning daylight as far as being able to pull it off up there without going out and getting a tourist visa or a visa exempt entry again because I beleive they require 21 days to process Non-Immigrant visas in Chiang Mai.

Cutting it fine, if it's 21 days at Chiang Mai, as Tod says then it's a given. Yeah a border hop would be better or get the non imm O visa in a neighbouring country and then you're good to go when you return to Thailand

No, wait. It turns out that I can’t get the the thing at the consulate until Tuesday

So let’s say, I show up at immigration with 19 or 20 days left on my extension. Will they still allow me to apply for the 90 day? Then, If it’s not acted on within 20 days, do they then cancel the application so I have to start over? Can I get another extension while I am applying?

Maybe it’s better to do a visa run first, and then start the application for the 90 days?
