How can I change my Non-B visa with a work permit to a DTV visa in Thailand for myself and my wife?

Hi everyone,

I am curious to know if anyone has been in a similar situation as me. I am currently on a Non-B visa with a work permit and am an American citizen. My wife has an O visa as a dependent and is an Austrian citizen.

I recently got a new job, that is a remote job for a non-Thai company. I want to change my visa over and my wife's over to the DTV visa for a number of reasons. It's the actual right thing to do, it's cheaper, etc.

My question is, has anyone successfully change their thai work permit and visa over to a DTV visa? Mine doesn't expire until August, so also curious if you had to cancel it before?

For those with dependents on their DTV visa, has anyone done it with a spouse of a different nationality than their own? Did you have to get your own DTV visa approved first, before they could apply for theirs? If so, how long did this take you and where did you do it?

It's a bit of a complex situation and we're thinking of canceling our visas before they expire and go to a neighboring country to apply for our DTV visas. Thanks for any advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat with a Non-B visa and an Austrian spouse with an O visa is considering switching both to the DTV visa due to economic and legal reasons. They are inquiring about experiences in changing their visas, particularly regarding the need to cancel their current visas and the process for obtaining a DTV visa for a spouse of a different nationality. Comments from the community provide insights on visa cancellation procedures, the timing of applications, and requirements for dependents.

Are you actually on an extension of stay and not a visa at all? The difference is important so check your passport. Assuming your on an extension of stay you need to cancel your work permit and the extension the day you stop working for the Thai company, you can do this in advance with a letter from the company stating your last day of work. Same should apply to your spouse as her extension depends on yours. Then travel to a nearby country and apply for the DTV, once you have yours your spouse can apply for hers showing details of your DTV, marriage certificate etc

If you are no longer working for the local company, are you sure they have not already canceled your visa for you? Law requires them to cancel within 7 days.
