How can I cancel my DTV visa to apply for a Non-Immigrant B visa in Thailand?

I secured a job in Bangkok, and now I want to cancel my DTV visa so I can apply for a Non-Immigrant B (work) visa. I left Thailand a few days ago and returned to the country where I originally got my DTV visa approved.

I contacted the embassy 3 days ago, but I haven’t received any response yet. According to my employer, I need to cancel the DTV visa, return to Thailand on a tourist visa, and then they will help me switch to a Non-B visa.

Do you have any suggestions or advice on how to proceed? I would appreciate any help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on cancelling their DTV visa to apply for a Non-Immigrant B (work) visa after securing a job in Bangkok. They left Thailand and contacted the embassy but have not received a response. Comments suggest that the DTV visa generally cannot be cancelled while active, though it may be possible to transition to a Non-B visa from within Thailand. Others recommend returning to Thailand on a tourist visa and then applying for the Non-B, emphasizing the importance of waiting for the embassy's response and consulting with immigration officials.

Do not take this as 100% but pretty sure the only place you can have the DTV cancelled is the issuing authority ie the embassy who issued it. You will need to wait and contact embassy. You could go to an immigration office with friendly volunteers that may be able to ask questions for you. Depending on location there are helpful volunteers at offices. The ones I spoke with last week were most helpful in Chiang Mai. Good luck getting it down. I had a bit of a nightmare moving from O to B but it all worked out in the end. Two trips to Singapore and a border run to Cambodia it took

Anonymous participant 970 I had to have my O cancelled to move to a B. The only ones who could cancel while on a multi re-entry was the issuing Immigration Office

Anonymous participant this may not be possible. As you have a current visa, not a joke.

Anonymous participant this may be the case. Current policy would say it can’t be canceled, but this is the first 5 year visa that is being used by many

A visa can not be cancelled, and the embassy won't issue another visa while you hold an active visa. However if your employer is willing to jump through the paperwork hoops to get you a Non-B inside Thailand the DTV can be changed for another visa type at an immigration office inside Thailand in exactly the same way as tourist or visa exempt entry can be (it's basically just a glorified tourist visa)

I personally don't think that DTV visa holders have the privilege to change to a Non-B Visa. I think the best option for you is to leave the country, apply for your new visa, and re-enter with that visa. The DTV visa will either be automatically cancelled or can be cancelled later. Immigration officers are the best people to answer that—wait a few more days for a clear response.

When I had an O and switched to a B to get a WP I had to have the O cancelled first. Then I went to Singapore for the B on basically no visa. The first time I went while on the O the Embassy said they would not issue a B while O is still live. I came back to Thailand and asked to be let in on Visa Exempt. Immigration at airport said go to issuing office for O to be cancelled. If it is different for the DTV I do not know. I have also been told the only place a DTV can be cancelled is the issuing embassy

a visa can't be cancelled and they won't issue another visa while you have an active one.

They do if you leave the country it’s cancelled automatically.

this may be true for some visas but the DTV is valid for 5 years and is multi entry so simply leaving is not going to cancel it I think.

I agree with you, but what I mentioned at the end was that ‘Immigration officers are the best people to answer that.’ When someone asks in the group, what we can offer are our own thoughts and experiences but at the end of the day, we’re just like them(non-imm).

immigration officers don't know anything about visas issued by an embassy. It's a completely different government agency

- immigration will only offer support with extensions or other documents they created. Visas like DTV fall under MoFA
