Does a Non-B visa become invalid when the work permit expires, and will there be a fine for overstaying?

Good day. I have a valid non-B visa until September. I have a work permit and I will not renew it. Is it true that on that day, when the work permit expires, on the same day the visa becomes invalid. And I have to pay fee for overstay. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster questions whether their non-B visa would become invalid upon the expiration of their work permit and if they would incur an overstay fee. Comments clarify that the validity of a non-B visa remains intact despite the work permit's expiration, allowing the holder to stay in Thailand until the visa's expiration date. They can continue making border runs every 90 days without facing penalties related to the work permit. However, transitioning from a non-B visa to a Non-O visa cannot be performed without leaving the country.

Ok slight variation on the OP’s post... 😬 I have a Non- Im B Multi, I want to apply for a one year extension of stay based on marriage, (I know about the money in account/income requirement etc) can this be done in country on my existing visa or do I have to exit and re-enter on another type of visa?

Thank you very much guys

thanks 🙏🏼

Darren, as you already mentioned this is a variation on this topic. So now we will get different answers to different situations and can get confusing. You can not apply for a 1 year Extension of Stay using your Non Immigrant B visa.

Just an FYI: for anyone on a year-long, multi-entry Non-B visa.

It does not matter if you quit your job and cancel your work permit when you are on this type of visa. You are free to stay 90 days at a time for the validity of the visa no matter if you're working or not.

@Evgeny *******
, you are on a VISA (not an extension) and that means you can continue to coming in and out of the country on that visa until the "enter before" date. If you exit/re-enter just before Sept 26th 2018 you would get stamped in for 90 more days.

Unfortunately you CANNOT turn the visa you have into a year long extension of stay based on retirement and you can't switch to a 90 day Non-O visa inside the country from it either.

you can get as much time out of this visa you have as you can but then you will either need to go get a 30 day visa exempt entry or a single entry tourist visa and convert that to a 90 day Non-O at the immigration office

OR

Once you get as much time out of this visa as you can you can go to a thai consulate and buy a 90 day single entry Non-O visa

I have a similar situation coming up. My work permit runs until September and I will be leaving my current role when that time comes. However my non b is valid until November.

Do I have to leave in September or can I stay until November?

I have been doing a border bounce every 90 days so far (first year having a non b).

Thanks
Chris **********
That's great! Thanks for your help!
Robert *******
Yes, correct. Enter before date is on several visa changed into valid until date. You can even make a visa run early November and return to get a new 90 day period using this visa
Chris **********
Ok thanks.... It doesn't appear to have an "enter before" date. It has "valid from" - Nov 16 2017 and "valid until" - Nov 15th 2018.

When I do my border bounce in August the stamp I receive will say admitted until early Nov, depending on what day I go.

So just to clarify, regardless of my work permit and current role finishing, I will be able to stay until early Nov?
Robert *******
You can use the visa till the "enter before" date mentioned on the visa. an Actual visa does not get cancelled.
Robert *******
If you have a valid Non Immigrant B visa and doing every 90 days a border run, this visa stays valid. If you're on the Extension of Stay based on working and doing 90 days reports at Immigration you must cancel this the same date as the day your stop working.

@Lu**
, As I said in the beginning. You can not transfer a Non B into a Non O. Or get Extension of Stay based on being over 50 (retirement) on it. He must start with a new Non Immigrant O visa.
Luke ******
To add on the above, Robert Lagas, don't some offices insist for people to go abroad and start fresh with a non O, that they further extend for 12 months? Do they happily extend permissions of stay derived from a non B for retirement purposes?
Luke ******
Border run 17 July. Another border run just before the 26th of September (say 24th September) will stretch it to 22nd December if you wish.
Robert *******
Border run 17th of July. Will get you a new Admitted to Stay till 15 October. So no problem if you WP ends, you can stay till that date on not get fined.

i'm doing border run on 17th of July
Luke ******
And what does your 90 day stamp say? What is the admitted until date?

@Evgeny *******
Let's get this clear than. What is the Admitted to Stay date stamped in your passport? And you're using a visa as on this picture as example, valid untill .. September

I realized that there will be no problems on the border. I would not ask that question if I was not told from the immigration office that they can be fined me if I delayed the documents for a new visa.
Luke ******
As Robert said above. You can continue to stay in Thailand on your current permission of stay and you can use your visa until expiry (continue to do 90 day border runs).

@Evgeny *******
The advice provided above is given on the understanding that you do know what's in your passport. I.e. a multiple entry visa valid for 12 months issued at a consulate outside of Thailand that gives you a maximum permission of stay of 90 days per entry.

Sorry. Are you sure that the immigration office will not fined me? About crossing the border, I understand everything.
Robert *******
As said a Visa will not be cancelled if you stop working. You can stay till the Admitted to Stay date stamped in your passport.

A visa and 90 days border runs
Robert *******
What is inside your passport? A visa and you go every 90 days to a border OR an Extension of Stay and you report every 90 days at an Immigration Office?

I am 51 years old. If the work permit expires on July 25, and I will finish the documents for the new visa on July 30th. Will I pay a fine?
Robert *******
You can not transfer a Non Immigrant B visa into a Non Immigrant O visa. If you're on an Extension of Stay you can cancel your Extension of Stay based on working and directly apply for a new Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age (retirement) if you meet the requirements at any Immigration Office.

Thank you. I just want to transform Non-B into a Non-O (pension ) visa in the immigration office. It turns out that I have to do everything in one day, if I do not want to pay a fine.
