Do you need to clear Malaysian immigration for a same-day flight back to Thailand for a METV border bounce?

Question for Tod/Robert and other knowledgeable members...

If I fly to KUL and return on next flight back to Thailand (same day) for border bounce on METV:

1. Does Thailand immigration require me to stamp into Malaysia before returning, as having entered another country or is it as simple as just having exited Thailand?

And:

2. Do you know if It is possible to arrive and return to Thailand by same day flights, in KUL, without clearing Malaysian immigration or customs - not sure if Malaysian immigration or the airline requires it?

Cheers...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the requirements for a border bounce from Thailand to Malaysia and back using a same-day flight under the METV. Participants share experiences and clarify that some travelers have successfully returned to Thailand without clearing Malaysian immigration if they remained within the transit area. However, it is generally safer to stamp in and out of Malaysia to avoid issues with Thai immigration. Keeping boarding passes is recommended to prove travel for re-entry.

Thanks, have all the answers I need - enjoy your day 🙂

IF you are from a country that gets into Malaysia for free (without needing to buy a visa) you CAN indeed fly in to KL, stay in the transit area, and then just go get on your flight back to thailand without stamping in and out of the country.

KEEP your boarding passes because thai immigrations will question you when you fly back in BUT it most definitely CAN be done.

You have to get stamped in and out from another country, else they just cancel your exit stamp. My friend has a small aircraft in Phuket and we were going to do a visa run with it to Malaysia. We were stamped out, but encountered bad weather conditions en-route and turned back. It caused a bit of an issue when we landed, but eventually they just cancelled our exit stamps and updated it on the system. We had to take a van the next day.

That is NOT correct.

Jason Andrews that’s not correct at all...only 3 months ago I flew into KLIA2 from Bangkok and stayed inside a hotel within the arrival/departure hall at KLIA2 - did not need to clear immigration, then the next morning I went straight to the gate to catch my next flight to Australia - all within KLIA2 without clearimg immigration.

It is very possible and designed to “transit” without clearing immigration

You really should refrain from making statements of facts when you clearly don’t know what you are talking about lol

I actually posted a response to the Admin's post to find out how they managed to do it. It's impossible to get from International Arrivals to International Departures at KL without passing through immigration. You could probably find a maintenance door, but would get into loads of trouble if caught.

others say they have not needed to stamp in and out of another country...and returned successfully

But given I have the time, I will stamp into and out of KL...just to be on safe side 🙂

Also done it by flying to Penang. It takes no time to clear customs and check back in.

If that’s the case save both the boarding passes as proof of actually flying out and in.

I guess the question is all about saving passport space.

Without the stamp they might think you never left the airport.

I flew to Singapore and back in the same day and the IO asked to see my boarding pass.

I’m flying out of DMK and back into UTP so they will know I left the airport hahah

There are reports on this page from people who did this and went through without problems. Just fly to KL and took the next plane back.

Jason, you get flight tickets as two one-ways, not a return (round) trip. You need to check-in (web/mobile) both flights in advance. Go straight to international transit counter when get off the airplane at KL.

I would question how they went from international arrivals to international departures without passing through immigration. You probably could if you found a maintenance door between the two, but otherwise it is impossible to do it at KL airport.
