TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the feasibility of self-driving from Phuket to the Malaysian border for a same-day border bounce. While some participants affirm the possibility, others warn about potential requirements to stay overnight in Malaysia. Recommendations include taking a local drive to Satun and walking across the border or considering the Ranong border for a quicker trip. Participants note that if you are only bouncing across, driving may not be necessary, and walking could save time. Additionally, the required paperwork for the vehicle and insurance depends on whether the car is crossing the border.

There are vans that do this everyday and its not expensive and you save yourself the hassle of the drive.

Stay 2 days in Malaysia, Penang would be the first choice if you can drive down for 2 hours after the border. If you cant, just stay in Chang Loon, nothing much there though. Get your car insurance done at Dan Nok. I drive from Chiang Rai to Kuala Lumpur frequently.

no, Myanmar nationals receive 14 day bilateral agreement entry but only at international airports. They aren't going to be able to keep bouncing out and back at a land border to a different country that isn't Myanmar.

You cant exit by car with a rental car though. Laos is also easier by land; just park, walk trough, walk back. No need to stay over like sometime required with Malaysia.

I usually fly to Ubon and drive to Chong Mek.

If you're just bouncing across the border and don't need to drive, you can save on car insurance and license plate number stickers. Sometimes there are traffic jams at the border, so walking is much faster.

None if the car isn't crossing but if it is then a car "passport" from the local Dept. of Land and Transportation will be required (assuming that you are the registered owner).

I second this. It’s only 4 hours rather than 6 ( one way). Then a 40 minute long tail ride. Check into and out of Myanmar in 5 minutes then buy some duty free and return. You certainly won’t be pestered in to staying overnight.

Many reports of people being required to stay 1 or 2 nights in Malaysia when doing a border bounce, so should find somewhere you can park for a while.
