Do I need to renew my passport before my Non-immigrant-O visa extension expires if it is expiring soon?

My Non-immigrant-O extension will expire on 21 January 2019. My USA passport will expire 11 months later: on 7 December 2019. The secretary at my NGO, who claims to know about such things, said this will be a problem, and that I need to get a new passport before my visa extension. Any truth to this? Thank you, in advance.

They will not issue a one year visa to a passport with less than one year validity.
