What happens to my Non-O visa extension if my passport expires before the extension period ends?

Question

Hello all! I have a question about getting an extension to Non-O visa and passport expiration. My understanding is that if a passport expires before the end of yearly extention, the extention would be given until the passport expiration date (in our case passport expires in Feb 2024 and yearly extention would be till Jul 2024). Am I correct that if we use this passport to get the stamp, it would be till Feb 2024? And after we renew the passport, can we get the extention stamped in it till July 2024? Or would Feb be always the new renewal date?
We're trying to get the passport renewed before we get the extention but there might not be enough time to receive it.
Thank you! 🙏

If your passport expires before the end of your Non-O visa extension, the extension will only be valid until the passport's expiration date, rather than the full extension period. Once you renew your passport, you cannot transfer the remaining extension validity to your new passport; instead, you will need to apply for a new extension based on the new passport. Thus, your new yearly renewal date will be the expiration date of the original passport.

You’re correct that the extension will only be valid until the expiry date of the passport. Once you have a new passport you’d need get the extension transferred to the new passport and then apply again in February for a for a year extension. “Lost months” won’t be transferred.
