TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the presence of Americans in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok, and explores perceptions of Black women by Thai people. Many commenters share positive personal experiences, indicating that Thai culture is generally welcoming and does not prioritize skin color. Some users mention the existence of American communities, especially among Black Americans, while also addressing concerns about racism. Overall, the consensus is that while racism exists in some forms, many expats feel accepted and have positive interactions in Thailand.

I lived and traveled in Thailand for 10+ years. Obviously, no major problems, or I wouldn't keep coming. There probably are some Thais who are racists toward Blacks, but it has not been a major issue. The very few problems I've had have been with non-Thais. I've experienced some extra scrutiny with security, police, immigration. But as soon as they see the US Passport, complete change in demeanor. "Oh! You're an American." Smiles and waived through. It's like the Mexican - American comedian Fluffy joked. "I had to travel 10,000 miles to be treated like an American."

Hi Paris if you find yourself in Chiang Mai I’d love to hangout. I think you will find that it’s not hard to make friends and navigate this area.

Are there any Americans in Thailand??.. what a very american question.

I am here , if you have money 💰 they love you 😘

A black American here calls himself chocolate man in Thailand and has a successful youtube channel. Thais seem to love white skin. Every body wash shower gel has the word white written all over them. They buy it lol
Andi ***********
@Alain **************
I have watched a lot of his vids. Skin lightening is a major thing all over Asia, Korea, Japan, India etc. Yet so many white people love looking browner, with fake tan lotion, sun tanning etc,.

You are American? Why go all the way to Thailand to find other Americans? You would be better studying up some travel phrases or lists of must visit places and you will know as much or more than any American abroad you encounter. Also don’t worry about racism abroad, you live in AMERICA and survived this long. Any micro aggression or annoying questions you experience in Thailand will be tame to the racism of America. You will have a great time in Thailand

I’m not from America . I’m looking for Americans because they’re more open minded than any other race in the world.
Vitico ********
@Paris *********
there are not that many Americans compared to europeans and Australians. Except for phuket where I encountered a few American tourists, most other people I have met in Bangkok that told me they are American I didn’t believe them at all. They were either African or Israeli just pretending to be from the US.

Skin color not matter in Thailand

Your attitude and personality matter a lot tho
Jo **********
they don’t

No one in any country likes women who thinks skin color is important. you are the only one who is not yet color blind with respect to humanity.

If you’re worried about racism here, I would say don’t worry. I have two kids who are half black & have not had any issues here. We are in our third year here though, and I can honestly say I don’t think I have seen more than ten black people here total. We have been in Pattaya, Bangkok & HuaHin.
Sadè ********
Don’t listen to some of the racist ignorant people in the comments. I’ve lived in thailand for two years, im a black woman and never experienced racism from a thai person. They’re friendly and mind their own business. If you’re looking to network with other black communities in thailand, there’s two groups you can follow on INSTA, @blackinbangkok.th and also @black.in.phuket they host events, such as game nights, parties ect, a lot of them are from all over america and canada!
Kim *********
@Sadè *******
racist ignorant people here? you base that on what? Totally nonsense
Sadè ********
@Kim ********
someone commented saying “a lot of Thais don’t like black people.” that’s a very ignorant comment to make.
Kim *********
@Sadè *******
well that is certainly not a rascist remark but a remark based on observation I am sure
Sadè ********
@Kim ********
i never said it was a racist remark i said it was ignorant.
Kim *********
@Sadè *******
yes you did! I commented on your remark about rascist and ignorant people here
Sadè ********
@Kim ********
Look back to my original comment, it said SOME comments, here’s the definition of the word some. Meaning i can think one comment is racist and another one ignorant, not one comment both racist and ignorant. In the comment i’m saying the remark he made was ignorant. I’ve simplified my comment to the most basic form, if you still don’t understand then i cant help you
Kim *********
@Sadè *******
and there were no rascist comments at all which is actually what I said. If you can't understand that then I can't help you
Sadè ********
@Kim ********
are you okay??😵‍💫😵‍💫 you just accused me of saying the person who said “a lot of thais don’t like black people” as me saying they’re racist, i corrected you and said no i was referring to that comment as them being ignorant?? lmao. we’re going around in circles. Have a good day Kim.
Kylie *******
@Sadè *******
and your speaking from your experience everyone's experience is not the same and what makes us racist and ignorant ?? We're commenting on our experiences and I can assure you I know plenty that do not like other ethnicities just because you havnt had that experience does not mean this person's experience will be the same as yours !!!
Sadè ********
@Kylie ******
did you read my comment properly? i said “SOME” i didn’t accuse everyone that’s commented of being racist and ignorant but some comments sound really uneducated, ignorant AND very unnecessary.
Kylie *******
@Sadè *******
it is what it is everyone's got an opinion and each to their own

rightfully so. but don’t reply to my comment trying to accuse me of something i didn’t do all because you misinterpreted my comment wrong, thankyou.

As a Black woman in a touristy area of Thailand, most Thai people smile when I smile at them.

Some just stare even if you smile at them (it’s probably because they aren’t used to seeing many of us in real life and I’ve also heard that some Thai people don’t talk to people they don’t know or don’t see on a regular basis)

Most people might stare/glance/take a peek at you because they are curious but look away when you notice them (they tend to mind their own business like people in most major cities in the world, but again, they are still curious about us.)

They tend to really like our hair though (they will literally point to your hair and give a thumbs up lol), especially if it is big and curly.

If you plan on relocating here, chances are you will be able to make friends with people in your building or in your neighborhood after they see you around a few times. They also like to practice a few English words and teach you a few Thai words at the same time.

I haveeee had one instance where a Thai shop keeper came out and stood right behind me at a pop up shop in a mall ( I guess she was racially profiling me because she didn’t do that to any of the white tourists who visited her table before me, and obviously I left immediately after noticing the weird vibes) but that was the only occurrence that I have experienced and I have been here for a few months now.

I've spent some considerable time travelling Thailand and never encountered racism or felt threatened in anyway and have many positive interactions with Thai people.

After living in Thailand for 8 years, and practically in all major cities, islands etc., I can assure you that you will feel welcomed and accepted anywhere in Thailand. It's a completely different world than what you are used to in the US. As a culture, Thai people don't care about skin color. However, there is a historic tension going on with neighboring countries. And Indian tourists have gotten a bad rep here.
Kylie *******
@Uwe ***
they do care plenty of thai don't like but just don't go out of their way to say so
Uwe ****
I don't want to bias with Thai people as every country/ culture has its faults. But comparatively, my experience is that Thais are the most peaceful/ welcoming people I have met in my life. As far as not saying a word, I think that's exactly how a society should be, we don't agree with everyone, but we should be able to respect.

mind you, your experience doesn't count you are not black

you’re trying to be nice but you are mistaken 😆 they can be racist against themselves for the shade of their skin! And it can go way beyond that!

I don't even bother myself thinking about the word racism. I leave it to others.

...racist against themselves....????

That's classic...elitism...etc nit racism....dark skin equates to out door worker = lower wage= lower status = lower education etc...which is also wrong...but not racism...

@Joseph ********
what about the Karen people who have been here for centuries🤔
Joseph *********
@Jeff ********
yes what about Karen people....many of the monks in Chiang Mai are Karen...I taught them English for many years.

@George ******
totally not true I know plenty of thai that don't they just wouldn't say it for no reason !
George *******
@Kylie ******
Well M8, I reckon you would be hard to find anyone that is not racist to some degree.
Joseph *********
@George ******
racism does exist but the term is at times used incorrectly.

While living on Chiang Mai I often encountered individuals and families from no Thai background and they were generally wonderful and respectful to Thais.....then I woukd encounter a buscload of 40 people from the same country at a buffet lunch...shopping center...temple....Sunday Night Market...Doi Supep etc and their behaviour as rude and intimidating....that is not racism .. that's badly behaved people from certain countries.

Like wise the behaviour of some people from my own country is appalling but Thais did not discriminate against me because of that.
Kylie *******
@George ******
i don't even think it's people's skin colour its generally how people treat other people so if you have a bad experience with a certain race you tend to sort of tar everyone of that race with same brush (not that it's right but happens)
Nongnuch ********
@George ******
I would not say so. Thais can be very xenophobic and racist-like. Many Thais despise Indians and Blck people . .
Joseph *********
In my experience

From living in Chiang Mai for many years the general population is very very accepting.

What they don't tolerate is people of any nationality that behave in culturally abusive ways and tgat has nothing to d with race or religion.

In CM there is a large expat community. Most are very integrated but tgere are others...especially those that call themselves economic refugees. They only live there because they can lead a life of ease compare to their own country. But they are super critical of they way things are done in Thailand, criticism the Monarchy, make no attempt at Thai language, live in enclaves etc.

I woukd be enraged also with any group who lived in my country and abused its laws legal or cultural.
George *******
@Joseph ********
Are you referring to retirees when you say economic refugees? I can't comment on other Farangs (foreigners) that live in Thailand, all I know is that when I lived there I was far from being an economic refugee. I lived there because I love the country and its people. I could of lived anywhere pretty much because I earnt a very good living, but chose Thailand for the reasons I've stated and now I'm retired and my income has dropped dramatically, I will be going back to live there hopefully and it won't be because of money & cheap living, it'll be because of my love of the country and its people. I do understand what you say about foreigners critising the way Thailand does things, but at the end of the day Farangs shouldn't be critising anything about the way Thailand does things. It's none of Farangs business, as their only guests in the country. Waiting with bated breath now for all the troll comments 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Christopher *************
@George ******
I agree with you
Joseph *********
@George ******
read carefully....it is some not all retirees. They coined the phrase not me.
Joseph *********
@Nongnuch *******
the Indian think really has nothing to do with race. It's rejection of the some visiting people abuse Thai cultural norms.

it is the attitude that the Thai people prefer to avoid. There are groups of people that are just rude.
Bill *********
@Nongnuch *******
Exactly right. You can easily observe on the streets or in shopping areas where a Thai person will be in front of a shop with a menu, or sale banner, or whatever, and will speak to everyone, but be silent when Indians or black people walk by.

then would really have a problem. Sounds to me you have a victim mentality and I would not recommend you come to Thailand believing they are rscist, how insulting to ask. It is not based on colour, based on self entitled individuals who think they are better then every one else.

you asked a question which had nothing to do with visa to strangers on the internet. Facebook is a Public forum and as a member of this any FB group I can commemt on a message I found quite offensive, that is do Thais like Black preople.

I have never found the Thais being other then polite and welcoming. The same with the Bahranis, Emiratis, Saudis and Ghanaians were I have lived. I have never had to ask if they like "white" people.

Is you do not like it block me.
