What are the steps to transfer my ED Visa from an old passport to a new one?

Hi all,

I am here on ED Visa. I have run out of pages in my passport. I have gone to the American Embassy and ordered a replacement Passport.

Q1 Are there additional supporting documents or costs involved to get my ED Visa or Extension Stamp transferred to my new passport? I found one form on the Thai Immigration Site, “Transfer Stamp to new Passport Form”.

Q2 Do I need to go immediately? Or can I hang on to both passports, and on my next trip to immigration for extension (apprx 1 month) get the ED Visa or stamp transferred at that time? I am hoping to reduce the number of visits to Chaengwatthana. I may fly within Thailand before my next extension is due, not sure if this will be an issue.

Thanks for advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks guidance on transferring their ED Visa from an old passport to a new one after obtaining a replacement passport. They inquire about additional documents and costs involved in the transfer process, as well as whether the transfer must be done immediately or can wait until their next visa extension in approximately one month. The comments provided helpful insights, stating that a letter from the US consulate will accompany the new passport to facilitate the transfer and that the user can delay the transfer until their next immigration visit, emphasizing the importance of notifying their educational institution about the passport change.

I just changed passports and swapped over the visa stamps. It took about 3-4 hrs total, unless you are first in line. So you would probably miss out to get your ed visa on the same day.

I was cancelling a visa, immigration said that I had to transfer first, so I presumed it would be the same to extend

they do it at the same desk when they do your extension, so you just show up with both passports, hand over the documentation and they transfer the stamps and put your new extension into your new passport

when you get your new passport, you will get a letter from the US consulate that asks immigrations to transfer the stamps.

You can wait until your next extension BUT make sure that your school knows you switched passports so your extension paperwork has the correct information on it from them.

As a rule domestic travel inside the country only requires a picture i/d but take both passports just to be safe.

yes, good point about letting my school know about which passport. I will do that. Thanks

That last part, about domestic travel, needs a caveat: needs to be a Thai issued ID. So a driver's license or pink ID card would work but not a school ID or foreign driver's license
