Hi, is it required to re-new a non-O (retirement) Visa before the Visa itself expires? Example: visa expires 15 March. I re-enter 13 th March getting another 90 days, start the re-newal process im April or May. Thank you ๐Ÿ™

TLDR : Answer Summary
To renew a Non-O (retirement) visa, you must start the renewal process before the current visa expires. It is recommended to begin the renewal or extension at least 30 days before the expiration date, although some immigration offices allow you to do so 45 days in advance. If the visa expires on March 15 and you re-enter Thailand on March 13, you must apply for the extension before the deadline to avoid overstaying. If your visa expires, you cannot extend it and would need to reapply for a new Non-O visa instead.

Yes. One must renew before the old one expires. You can do that up to 14 days prior (though the time might be different depending upon your local office). Or you can fly out and come back in.

You re enter Thailand using a re entry permit on 13th March. Your current non o Visa extension based in retirement expires on 15th March. That gives you not much longer than 12 hours to apply for your new 12 month extension not counting how long it takes you to get to immigration office that issues your stamp. In my opinion that us cutting it too fine and UF you enter the country and fail to get your new stamp you will be on overstay. Personally I would not risk that and enter Thailand after your current stamp expires ie after 15th March and get stamped in 30 days Visa exempt if you qualify. You can then extend that by 30 days which gives you 60 days to get all your ducks lined up and apply for the 90 day non o based on retirement all over again. Once you have got this you can apply for a new 12 month extension provided you meet the financial and other requirements. As others have said the 90 day thing is the tm47 and has nothing to do with your Visa extension. Your 90 days will start on the day you re enter Thailand after which you will have to make the report but it can be done two weeks early or 1 week late in person. Different if you do it on line.

As per previous comment it really sounds like you are confused about expiry date and 90 day report. You can only do a 90 day report when you have a valid visa or visa extension. In your case this expires Mar 15.

and if my visa expires, I cannot "extend" but need to apply for a new 1 year non-O visa, correct? Even if I did my 90 day reporting on for example 14 March, correct?

@Chris ****
once your visa or extension expires that it. No extension. Have to reapply all over again.

You need to enter Thailand before the visa expires on March 15 and apply for a 1-year non-O extension at immigration. From what I understood, Non-O retirement visa extension can be done as a 1-day process. If your document is ready, you can get the stamp within the day itself.

However, it is usually recommended not to risk going on the last day before the visa expires. Extension can be performed 30-45 days in advance. The safest is to go 2 weeks before it expires in case they request any additional doc you will have time to prepare.

Ps. Don't mix visa extension with 90 days reporting.

You can't renew your visa, you can apply for a one year extension. This you can do when you have 30 days left on your last entry stamp, some immigration offices allow 45 days.

thank you. I thought extension is the same as renewal. So I have to obtain the extension BEFORE the date of expiry, correct?
Stephan ***********
@Chris ****
No, before your last entry stamp runs out. Your visa can be expired at that time already.

Assuming you have a multi entry non-o visa that would be ok

the visa was issued in Thailand. It doesn't state that's it is multi-entry. However immigration told me that I just get a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand each time. So I could return mainting the non-O visa. I was also told that the 90 days start to run again once I re-enter Thailand. So the next notification date would be 90 days from re-entering. I am just not 100 perecent clear whether I am allowed to stay the 90 days even if the visa already expired. In the past with 1 year tourist and business visas this was legal/ possible ๐Ÿ™

@Chris ****
Um... with 90 days you mean the 90 days report? Yes... that starts everytime new when you enter the country. For the visa it's what John said already... expired is expired and "re-entry" is different to "multiple entry".

@Chris ****
if you have a standard non-o with a re-entry permit your expiry date will not change and you will only be stamped in until your expiry date. If it expires on the 15th March you need to extend it by the 15th March
