TLDR : Answer Summary
In Chiang Mai, you can renew your Non O Visa (retirement) up to 45 days before its expiration. Once renewed, you'll receive a new 12-month validity period, provided your passport remains valid for that duration. Additionally, ensure you meet the income/banking requirements on the day of your renewal, which includes having three months' worth of bank funds available.

If they are asking how many days before their current extension expires can they go to the immigration office and get a new extension I would say they are NOT getting it in their home country but in country at the immigration office.

In Chiang Mai, you can go 45 days prior. You will get 12 months from the original date, provided that your passport is valid for that long. And you will need to meet the income/banking requirements on the day that you go (3 months for the bank funds).
