hi - I have a non-b that expires jan 12th. I am going to vietnam for a week at that time. And planned to potentially re-enter Thailand with a tourist visa. I am considering applying for Ed visa when I return. Do I need to actively cancel my non-b - in order to re-enter and begin application for Ed Visa - or will it automatically expire and "cancel" on jan 12th? I ask because schools I have contacted keep saying I need to "cancel my non-b"... I assumed it will expire. And when I re-enter Thailand I will have a garden variety 60 day tourist visa. Any help welcome.. Thank you!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is uncertain about whether they need to actively cancel their Non-B visa before re-entering Thailand with a tourist visa, especially since it expires on January 12th. They plan to apply for an Educational (Ed) visa upon return. Comments clarify that if the user is on an initial Non-B visa, they do not need to cancel it; it will automatically expire. However, if on a work extension, they must cancel it to avoid fines and ensure eligibility for a new visa.
Are you on the initial 90 day non-B visa, or are you on a work extension (the stamp in your passport says "extension of stay")?
If you're on the initial visa then you don't have to do anything except leave.
If you're on an extension then you need to cancel it or you likely won't be able to get another long-term visa or extension and will face fines for not cancelling it.
