Can I enter Thailand visa exempt to explore educational programs and then apply for an education visa later?

I am thinking about moving from the US to Thailand on an education visa. But I want to visit there again first and do some research about the programs and look for potential housing options, etc. Can I enter the country visa exempt to start my search, and then obtain a tourist visa while I am there if I need more time? And if everything turns out the way I am hoping, and I get everything lined up, can I then apply for an education visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering moving to Thailand on an education visa and wants to first visit to explore educational programs and housing options. They inquire if they can enter Thailand visa exempt, apply for a tourist visa while there if needed, and subsequently apply for an education visa. Responses indicate that entering visa exempt is possible for initial exploration, but you cannot convert that entry into an education visa without leaving the country. It is suggested to apply for a tourist visa from a neighboring country if more time is required. Users emphasized that coordination with educational institutions is key for a smooth transition to an education visa.

You can talk to us. We are a language school. Apply for an educational visa to stay in Koh Samui

If you’re only planning on a year maybe slightly longer, ED visa will work. If you think you’re going to live perpetually long term on ED, you’re going to be very disappointed. And, if you leave the country while on ED, you may have problems with the IO on re-entry.

Great plan. Do your research. Read the other postings. This is discussed daily on the forums. Go visit Thailand and the schools you are interested in. You probably should make several visits because Thailand is way way different than in the USA.

After all of that, then the school can advise you how to obtain your visa.

You do know that you will have to go to classes regularly?

Get a multi engry visa. You get up to 9 months and enough time to search a school. Duke is the best in Bangkok and you can probably live in Udom Sok for 15k baht if you want. Messege me if you need advice. I am at Duke right now.

I would have all my ducks in a row before i tried to get any visa, so come to Thailand, sort things out, get an agent to help you, then come back to Thailand with plenty of money!

I wish I had known how much I would want to stay when I was there! I am torn between what sounds like two options: 1) come in visa exempt and get extensions and then do border crossings to obtain more time, or 2) get an education visa, and have to test well in order to be allowed to stay. I wish there was an option to just move there and then explore my options. I am too young for the retirement visa, but I have enough money so that I don't need to work. I just don't know how best to go about this.

Phuket and Koh Samui are twice the price of Pattaya! Eating twice a day having good food is 800, 200 for coffee and breakfast, if u are staying in hotels gonna be 500 per night. 500 per day for incidentals. that 60k before you even have a beer! If u wanna stay in a shit hotel and eat street shit, stay home!

I suspect there is little point coming on an ED visa, it has been abused very much and I believe there are checks made on attendance and progress, if you really want to be a tourist, then be a tourist! Be aware Thailand is not cheap!

I'm curious why you say thailand is not cheap. From my perspective, what I have found in my research, and my time spent in phuket, it seemed pretty cheap.

30 days is not likely enough time to figure-out a employment situation and a living situation. If you rush it you may end-up in some unpleasant situations. However, you can get a 30 days extension which gives you 60 days, which maybe enough time.

You can not get a tourist visa while in Thailand but you can get one from most of the neighboring countries. It takes a couple of days plus transportation you will be out $200 probably. Getting a tourist visa while you are in your home country takes about 1-2 weeks ( I recently did it). Tourist visa can be extended for 30 days giving you 60+30 days. I am not that familiar with different types tourist visa. I *think* some can be converted to non-o (work visa).

Hint:

"Non-o" means "Non immigration type O visa", Almost all of your long term visa are 'non-SOMETHING'. I think I am on a non-o, marriage visa, as example.

If you come in visa exempt, you have to leave Thailand to get any kind of visa. You cannot convert visa exempt entry into an education visa (corrected on this! Couldn’t when I did my ed visa, but now you can 😄)

You could do visa exempt & figure out your long term plan. Then, go to Laos, Cambodia, or Vietnam to get a 60 tourist visa. Start your process of converting the visa to an Ed visa as soon as you get back (it’s usually 6 weeks - 2 weeks of your school processing & 4 weeks of processing at immigration). Or apply for your education visa in one of those countries, but I’ve never done that.

Good to know! That wasn’t the case when I was signing up for my education course in 2022.

What was the processing time? CMU took 6 weeks to process the visa change request (2 weeks with the school + 4 weeks for immigration) so still good to check with the school how long it will take because the process may be too long depending on the period of stay for the exempt entry. They had my passport the entire time.

USA citizen? You can show up and get a 30 day stamp. You can extend for another 30 days. So zero planning can easily get 60 days. Or apply for an evisa before you arrive and get 60 days on arrrival and 30 day extension.

You might need 21 days left on your stamp to apply for an education visa. The school will help you.

Nothing really is difficult.

Very popular here to do a border bounce for more time. You are allowed to leave the country from land borders and come back 5 minutes later for an additional 30 days. Repeat going to immigration for the 30 day extension. You can do this twice in a calendar year. Resets January 1st each year.

very helpful information! Thank you! Question about the border bounce...I have heard of this before, but my plan was to try and stay in phuket, which I don't believe is close to any border. Are the people taking advantage of this border bounce, just conveniently located near a border?

a border run doesn't mean land border. It just means bouncing out and back in. You can fly out and back in the same day as well for a border run.

you can only enter Thailand via land border without a visa (visa exempt) 2 times per calendar year.

There's no official limit if you do it by air until they say you can't anymore.

With a long term visa there's no limit

ok! Thank-you! You seem so knowledgeable about all of this, so I'm going to ask another question. What kind of long term visa should I be looking to get? I am starting to doubt that I want to do an education visa. I will likely still take classes, but the ED visa seems somewhat limiting and I want to be able to take my time choosing my courses and I don't necessarily want to be tested by immigration in order to remain in the country. I am a good student, but I do not test well under pressure.

there's not a lot of options if you're under 50 years old.

Find a job and get a work visa.

Get married to a Thai person.

Have a half Thai child.

Pay big bucks for an elite visa.

dang! I thought the purpose of having to prove you have enough funds in the bank, was to avoid non-citizens from taking jobs away from locals. I have the funds, but am not yet 50 years old.

you can look at LTR Wealthy Global Citizen. That one doesn't have an age requirement.

They don't worry about foreigners taking jobs because there's a huge list of jobs that foreigners are not allowed to do.

Facebook “Phuket Visarun” is one service you can use. Take a van and drive down with a group of people. Should be a day trip. Leave early in the morning and back in Phuket by dinner time.

Can I ask why did you decide on Phuket? I only spent a week there and decided it was not for me. It’s more expensive compared to other parts of Thailand. A lot more tourist crowded. I am curious.

that’s a perfect reason. If you do decide to explore more I would check out Krabi province as well. Only 90 minute drive from Phuket or a quick boat ride. I found it a lot more cheaper, quieter and more nature. I ended up in Chiang Mai for the last two years now in the north.

when you are considering your schooling options, seriously look at actual universities. You want to start over then get a new degree in another field, and you'll learn the language at the same time. As a career consideration an actual university is your best choice.
