What type of visa should I get for a 2-month stay in Thailand and how do I extend it?

Hi. So I’m wanting to go to Thailand and stay for 2 months. Originally I was planning on 3 months, but due to my financial situation that needed to change.

My first question is: is it easy to get a 30 day extension after my first month there? And how would I go about it?

Secondly: what type of visa will I need and where or how would you suggest I get it? (I’m not sure if a visa and extension are the same thing or not).

Thirdly: Should I just go ahead and book my round trip plane ticket for the entire 2 months I plan on being there, or hold off until I’m certain I’ll get the 30 day extension and just buy a ticket for 1 month which I believe is good for the first 30 days with only my passport?

Sorry, I’m a total rookie when it comes to all of this! I’ll be traveling alone so I want to be safe and not make any huge mistakes.

Thank you guys :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is planning a 2-month stay in Thailand and asks about visa options, specifically if a 30-day extension can easily be obtained after the first month. Community responses suggest that obtaining a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) can provide a 60-day stay, extending later if needed. Travelers can also enter Thailand on a 30-day Visa Exempt Entry and potentially explore options like multi-entry visas depending on future travel plans.

All great advice you guys! Thank you so much. This will be my first time traveling solo, so I’m very excited but also a bit nervous as well haha. I just want to explore a bit but basically stay in Chiang Mai the majority of the time as I was there this past December for a couple weeks and fell in love with it.

My plan is to find an apartment or condo in Chaing Mai and then travel about for only a couple weeks to Vietnam and Cambodia then return back to Thailand. I just want to make sure I have everything I need to bounce around a little with no hassle.

Just get tourist visa on entry 30 days then get extension. If you going to other countries you can get another visa when you come back to thai. Its easy your going on holiday. People love to make things complicated you dont need cash at the airport just plastic. They have seen bank cards in thailand. Its a whole lot harder to get into the states than it is thsiland

I don't gave it names to make live easy, it was the Thai Government and the Royal Thai Immigration Bureau who gave the names and set the rules. For advice life is only easy if the correct terms are used.

What ever you want to call it I'v arrived in bangkok on international flights at least 6 times a years for the last 7 years and never had a visa just 30 days on arrival. never being asked for funds at the airport, only one time at a land boarder which i have only ever done twice and then just showed them my plastic, (debit cards). Your coming on holiday its so easy just get on the plane and get a stamp at the airport. you don't need to go to the embassy if you planning staying 2 months.

Why make it complicated. There is no tourist visa on entry 30 days available in Thailand. It is called a Visa Exempt Entry (Entry without a Visa). You can not get a Visa by entering Thailand, you buy them at a Thai Consulate or Embassy. The Immigration Officer is allowed by law to ask proof of funds in CASH not an amount of plastic bags.

If you want to travel in and out of Thailand as you visit other countries I'd suggest a multi entry Tourist Visa. Valid for 60 days but unlike the single entry you can come back to the Kingdom should you desire .

You mentioned that you're planning to travel to other countries in the region. You should know that your single entry 60 day tourist visa AKA SETV (if you decide to get one at the Thai Consulate in the states) is only valid for ONE entry to Thailand. So, you enter, you get 60 day stamp in your passport and your visa is stamped "USED". If you then leave Thailand, you lose whatever days remain on that entry. So, if you plan on leaving Thailand within 30 days of arrival, then the SETV is not the visa for you.

If you are planning on travelling around to other countries (good idea...explore while you're here!) then just come and enter on the 30 day exempt entry. Then, anytime you travel to another country and come back to Thailand you get another 30 day exempt entry. Only caveat is that you are only permitted 2 visa exempt land entries per year (unlimited if flying).

One item to note though is that some airlines might not let you travel to Thailand without a visa in your passport. But, assuming you have a return flight, you can explain to them that you're entering visa exempt and, might work. All that being said, if you do plan on staying in Thailand for more than 30 days, definitely get a 60 day SETV as it is a cheaper and easier option with less headaches.

How long does it usually take for a Thai embassy to process the SETV?
Alan *******
assuming that you have a USA passport, there will not be any problem getting the 30 day extension. You don’t need a visa to enter.

Why would a person pay for a METV When visa exempt entry is free?
Barry ***********
Why would a person get an extension when they can get a *0 day visa before they leave
Robert *******
Best option is to get a Single Entry Tourist Visa, which gives you 60 days permitted to stay on Entry in Thailand. You can buy one at the nearest Thai Consulate or Thai Embassy.
