Do I need to apply for a new visa to return to Thailand after my retirement visa expired?

Jul 7, 2020
4 years ago
I have a 12 month retirement visa that was dated May 2019. I had three trips out of the country and got the visa extended each time. I came back to Oz for the burnoff season hoping to come back after it. Then the virus hit and I’m stuck in Oz till borders open. Do I have to apply for another visa or will I be able to come back on the visa I have. I came back in Feb 2020. Any help appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring whether they can return to Thailand on a retirement visa after being stuck in Australia due to COVID-19. Responses suggest that if no re-entry permit was obtained prior to leaving Thailand, the retirement visa may no longer be valid. The situation depends on the expiration date of the visa and whether travel restrictions allow for a return before it expires.

Thanks everyone for your help. Just hope I can come back to Thailand when the borders open. Keep safe.

Whenever I left Thailand on my retirement visa, a reentry permit was required. Fail to do that and your retirement visa ended when you left the country no matter what the normal expiration date was. Never heard of a retirement visa with multiple entries, but if that is what is stamped in your passport them reentry permit should not be an issue.

There are four types of "Retirement" visas: A Non-O single entry with an extension of stay based on retirement, a Non-O multiple entry, A Non-OA, and a Non-OX. The first two need a re-entry permit, the last two don't.

You can read more about them at:

Depends if you can travel out of Oz and get into Thailand before your visa expires, and that is unknown at the moment. If it looks like you won't make it before the visa expires, get a new one.

You get new full days stamp until your visa (sticker) is expired. When you still have valid 'admitted until stay' stamp after visa itself expired, you need to purchase re-entry permit to keep your rest days 'alive'.

From your OP, your visa (sticker) must have been expired May 2020. You need re-entry permit to enter Thailand using your rest of days from your last stamp. That's the reason
@T**
asked that.

If you didn't get re-entry permit BEFORE you left Thailand. It's done. You will need to enter Thailand next time on another visa or visa exempt entry.

thanks for the info. I have never been asked for a re-entry permit when coming and going that’s why I am abit confused by it all.
