TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing issues with renewing their Retirement Visa while stuck in Australia. They received advice that they do not need to do the 90-day reporting since they are outside Thailand, but if their visa expires while they are abroad, they must restart the application process upon returning. The Thai embassy confirmed they should reapply when back in Thailand.

This thread is getting derailed, and confusing now. I'm closing comments.

I'm in the same boat but I'll be waiting until the time comes that both borders are open for business. Otherwise you may be paying for an insurance policy you may not need to pay for.

The Thai embassy is correct. Re-apply when you return to Thailand.

Get a year long visa in Australia, enjoy nearly 2 years in Thailand with no immigration hassles.

Nope, it doesn't work like that. If you're out of the country you don't do 90 day reporting so you're okay in that regard. BUT if your retirement extension expires while you are out of the country you will have to start all over again from zero.
