TLDR : Answer Summary
If your Retirement Visa is set to expire while you are still in Australia, you generally do not need to take immediate action. However, you should apply for a new visa before you return to Thailand. If your visa has been extended within Thailand previously, you may need to reapply for a new visa and start the extension process again upon your entry.

and I would say, at this point we're done. Good luck to each and every one of you, stay safe (y)

I have the same problem and have had extended for 5 years but come january will probably have to start all over again but there should be options to extend at consulate in Australia.. as this would be more acceptable and viable for both parties involved..on a non o extension..

The ‘trauma’ of starting again is very similar to the ‘trauma’ of getting a new extension of stay every year. The only difference is you get a visa before you leave your country. Everything else is exactly the same.

5 years you had it extended?

I guess every year you got a new big stamp inside your passport with the text in line 2 Extension of Stay is permitted up to ../../..

a date 1 year later.

They never changed, extended, renewed, re stamped your visa sticker with new dates.

You can not alter a Visa after it is issued, that is why you enter Thailand and if you like to stay longer you apply for an Extension of this temporary Stay. The Consulate in Australia can not give you a longer stay in Thailand as you are not in Thailand.

what I am saying is I have extended for 5 years in thailand but due to the inability of entering the country or leaving this country special measures should be put in place so people can extend their retirement visas at a consulate in there own country rather than go through all the trauma of applying all over again...but it seems that is far too obvious or too easy to ever happen..

and while we understand WHAT you are saying you are confusing buying a visa from a thai consulate in another country with getting a yearly extension of stay from the immigration office. They are completely different.

You have two options; buy a visa from the thai consulate before you come back OR come back and start the process at the immigration office to first get a visa and then get an extension of stay.

>should be put in place

We aren't the government, and this group doesn't guess, or make proposals for the Thai government to implement.

You can not extend a stay at a place where you are not present. if you are in Australia, you are not in Thailand.

>should be options to extend at consulate in Australia

You can not extend a visa in a foreign country. You can purchase a new visa in a foreign country, and then come to Thailand and get an extension of stay

If you really have a visa from outside Thailand, it just expires. If you obtained an in-country extension, you'll have to enter on a new visa and start the extension process all over again.

You have to do nothing, only apply for a new visa before you go to Thailand.
