TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among commenters is that you do not need an onward flight when entering Thailand with a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa). However, experiences may vary based on airline policies, as some airline staff may insist on proof of onward travel. It is generally recommended to show your DTV documentation to immigration officials to clarify your entry status. Additionally, booking a refundable ticket is suggested as a precaution if needed.

for DTV an onward flight is not needed.

By the way, entry eligibility depends in no way on any carrier.

but it's the carrier that decides if they'll let you fly or not ...immigration seldom ask

define "decide". Whether you can fly or not is defined by rules, which are not in their control. They just need to check. "Determine" could be a more applicable word.

The decision to check it or not can (and does) depend on the staff member checking you in. The actual decision to allow you in *should* not depend on them. If you get checked, and don't qualify, normally they cannot still let you fly. I know it sometimes happens but that certainly isn't the procedure. The reverse is not possible: qualifying for entry and then getting refused. An airline is of course not allowed to refuse their service to paying customers who qualify for it.

Not sure about the "even" in your sentence. I think it depends only on the person checking you in. Airlines all have the same policy: qualifying for entry is required to be allowed to fly. Quite straightforward.

I wish it was straightforward.....sometimes you may be asked by a particular airline ...at other times not asked ....seems particularly arbitrary and annoying

I wish there was a rule and that they'd all adhere to it ....I don't want to book onward flights if it's unnecessary ...it's frustrating and annoying . Most times I don't need to buy an onward flight but when you get to the check in counter and asked for proof it's a pain . I've always travelled with an open itinary and prefer to be flexible with my plans ....just inconvenient.

If the Thai Embassy/Consulate doesn't require airline tickets with application, why should airlines, want to see a return or onward travel doc.

Probably for the same reason the immigration in Thailand will not ask you for a onward ticket.

But some airlines will

Not all airline gate agents are experts on visa requirements. They may insist on an onward ticket. Be prepared to buy a cheap onward ticket.

you don't need on onward ticket. It's how you answer when asked. If you are just belligerent you get a ticket cause you don't know any better. You are in your rights to buy a one way ticket if you have a visa you can leave prior to that time when where and how you want. Airline staff to not get to set those rules. If they insist ask to speak to a manager. Stand your ground. Only been asked once in Australia by Jetstar and I said it's my choice as a traveller l can leave via any way l want as a traveller as long as l don't overstay. They were fine with that.

it does not depend on the airline. They don't make these rules, it's Thai immigrations rules which are the same for all. You do not need it.

your wrong Bart it is the responsibility of the airlines to make sure you have the proper visas for the country they are transporting you to. Most airlines pay no attention to the requirement, but some due.

dude 😅. I'm not wrong! Yes it is the responsibility of the airline to check for entry eligibility, but who determines the rules that define entry eligibility? Certainly not the airline.

The rules are the same for all airlines.

It's the airlines that have to foot the bill if Thai immigration turns you back. So they may require an onward flight. But I don't think they will for a DTV, unless they misunderstand it.

so what? What I've said is still true. If you say I don't know what I'm talking about, it only makes yourself not know what you talk about.

I suggest you check the conditions for Thailand via exemption before telling others they're wrong.

Be prepared to show airline Visa is good 180 days, and extendable for another 180 days. DTV is still new, so maybe some problems.
