Do I need an onward flight ticket to enter Thailand on an O visa?

Please help clear up my confusion on flight requirements when arriving in BKK. My intention is to start the process for an O visa immediately upon arrival. Bank account, transfer money to the bank etc. People have said that a departure or onward flight is not needed but, I just watched a video here saying it is definitely needed. I arrive in 2 weeks, to clear this up do i need a departing ticket on arrival.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement for an onward ticket when entering Thailand varies and can depend on the airline check-in processes rather than strictly on immigration. While it's technically required, many travelers have reported not being asked for it upon arrival. However, some airlines do enforce this rule more strictly, so it's advisable to have proof of onward travel. Options include booking a cheap ticket that can be canceled or using an online service that provides temporary tickets for a fee.

Are you entering with a Visa?

If not, the AIRLINE - NOT Immigration - will usually demand to see an onward ticket.

I've seen recommended:

It is a requirement to have a return or outbound ticket leaving Thailand, when you check in at your departure point / country, the airline staff at check in are supposed to check you have the outbound ticket, in Sydney I have found Thai airways staff always ask, & they are not supposed to issue your boarding pass if you do not have one. Some ppl use a site called onward ticket, you can apparently buy a legitimate ticket for $14, this ticket expires? 24 hours after issue, ppl just use it to show they have one.

Alternatively you could by a fully refundable ticket online, use it to show then after arriving in Thailand cancle & get a refund.

I understand there logic in thinking ppl have a return ticket, that they will not stay in Thailand 🤣🤣🤣. In the early days of coming to Thailand, I had a legit return ticket, came 30 days visa exemption, decided to stay longer, got a 3 month visa, & simply didn’t board my booked flight from my original ticket, while over many other years, flying with Thai airways, my flight date was changeable for a cost of $50, I would be in Thailand for 6 months, however I wouls usually stay longer, so I would change the date of my flight for $50 Aus approximately

Sometimes they ask for it. Sometimes they don't. Just buy a cheap flight to Vietnam or Cambodia. We called it a "throw away ticket". When coming in the first time, we were asked for proof of forward travel.

Go to Onward ticket service online. It costs $14 for “proof” of departing ticket. I just used them and it worked like a charm. I was asked in Cambodia for proof by Asia airlines.

It’s a requirement, but they do not always check , in the 20 years I have been coming here I have only been asked a handful of times, when I have been asked it’s been by the airline at check in (Thai airways LHR) and on the odd occasion by immigration on arrival at Bangkok.

My opinion (only an opinion) is that immigration in Thailand only ask people who’s appearance they don’t like or people who have multiple entry stamps to Thailand over a short period of time.

I would suggest you get an onward flight rather than take the risk ,

It depends on the airline and the immigration agent.

You are supposed to have an exit ticket, a place to stay and $700 cash in hand.

This is endlessly discussed.

Some get through and some get caught.

The agents don’t speak English or want to hear excuses….

What will you do if you are refused at your home airport or at BKK?

Immigration agent? Since when has there been a Immigration Agent (for Thailand) at the departing airport.

It is the Airline Ticketing Agent that will require a return ticket.

“It depends on the airline and the immigration agent.”

Read & reread, what are you talking about immigration agent? Where is this (supposed) immigration agent at? The departure airport or arrival?

Yes, because you are arriving as a tourist. Once you actually have an O visa, you won't need a return flight/onward travel.

depends on the airline for sure. They can deny boarding. But really depends on the person. If looking presentable and explain your intent for long term visa on arrival they often let you pass or sign a waiver

Agreed. I once had an issue returning to Thailand on a non O spouse visa. Checkin said I didn't have a return ticket..Even after explaining I LIVE IN THAILAND, and are returning there, they still called immigration police to checkin, who confirmed I was correct and didn't need one...

. I'm well aware of that... I'm just showing an example of how pedantic some airlines can be regarding return or onward ticket. I've flown to Thailand at least a dozen times on visa exempt before I had an o visa .. wasn't asked for return because they already knew.. because I bought it from them and it was in their checkin data base. You're missing the point. They have the right to refuse, be prepared. And "you had a visa" doesn't cut it because tourists visa holders also require return or onward if asked for it.

No.

Airlines ask for it if one DOES NOT have a Visa,

because they are obligated to fly the passenger back to point of Departure if entrance is refused.

I can totally understand. Often try to negotiate my way thru and so far, so good! I really only fly on one way tickets to anywhere. It seems that if you have good reason and don’t look like a vagrant or backpacker, they let you through

Agreed again. But I would say be prepared to buy a ticket home or somewhere onward instantly at checkin counter or passport control in TL, on the off chance they do demand one, which they have the right to do.

However infrequently immigration asks... your airline is quite likely to check that you have "onward travel" within the days you'll be stamped in for, mate.

What's your citizenship?

You can ask your airline, but I suggest you book a "rented" ticket. Search for 'onward ticket' there's plenty of sites that for 10-15£ will sort you.

You can also just book a cheap flight with a budget airline to one of the neigboring countries. As long as you show a flight out of TH it's okay. Don't need a returnflight to where you come from.
