TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling to Thailand on a 60-day Tourist Visa, an onward flight ticket is generally required. While immigration may not always enforce this rule, airlines often require proof of onward travel before boarding. If you haven't booked a return flight, consider purchasing a changeable ticket or using a service to buy a temporary onward flight for around $10 to avoid potential issues at the check-in desk. While some travelers report not being asked for onward travel proof, it's safer to err on the side of caution.
depends on what country. Many now use the online evisa system so you donât go to the embassy or even send in your passport. Itâs all done online via email.
Welcome to the inner workings of the Thai entry system. You seem to have stalled at step 1.
Perhaps someone at some point in time will possibly realise how f#%*ing stupid it all is and perhaps ponder why Mr and Mrs Joe Average arenât coming to Thailand anymore.
Iâd rather have day at immigration than do that online application,, ridiculous the amount of personal details youâve to upload ,, it took me 20 different pics of my passport for it to accept it ,, and it just got worse as I went further on .
online evisa must be bad never had to do it. The TR60 in Australia was easy to do, but we also have to send passport to Sydney or cambera as our visa get glued into the passport.
Iâve never known anything like it mate ., they wanna know everything bad how big your Hampton is ,, and thinking about it , thereâs that many fooking sections to it there might have been an Hampton upload request at the end lol đ
Bank details , statements , wages , how regular ,, and on and on mate .
Then it crashes or skips back a section so youâve it all to do again , Iâve just rang my fiancĂŠe and told her about it , Iâd rather spend 48 hours at the immigration office than do that fucking thing
If you are entering on a long term visa, like a Non O or Non OA or Thailand Elite you do not need an onward flight out from Thailand.
If on a visa exempt entry or tourist visa you need to have a flight ticket out of Thailand within the amount of days that your initial entry allows, regardless that you can get an extension in country. It doesnât need to be a return ticket, any ticket out of Thailand will suffice.
In theory immigration can deny you entry if you donât but they rarely ever would, because they know you can get an extension.
Almost always the hang up will be when you try to board your plane. Many airlines will not allow you to board without an onward ticket within the number of days.
Some will let you. Many wonât. You probably donât want to be the one scrambling to buy an onward ticket at the check in desk. Best option is a changeable ticket, and just change the date when youâre here.
Alternatively you can Google âonward flight ticketâ and youâll find a plethora of companies willing to sell you one for around $10. A real ticket, Phuket to Singapore, would be approx ÂŁ25/$35 depending on the time of year.
Youâll probably get a number of replies saying âI managed to enter with no problem, therefore you wonât have one either.â Well you wonât find out which way itâll go until you get to the check in desk.

Hello all. Just wanted to let everyone know that I DID need to have evidence of a return or onwards flight at immigration when I landed in Thailand.
You and many others. More often than not itâll be the airlines that stop you, but it can be at the immigration counter too. People can take a chance if they want to. But thatâs what it is - chance.
Oh, so you can speak for the thousands that have found out the hard way that you canât? As my post says, some get away with it but many more wonât. Generally if itâs a short haul flight from around Asia the airlines donât care, but a long haul flight and itâs usually a different story.
I repeat, complete rubbish, entry via visa exempt does not require an onward flight. Please point me to the relevant immigration regulation that supports your claim.
still waiting on a site that supports your claims. Perhaps you havenât been able to find one. Perhaps you were just confused. Perhaps the next time you post wild claims you may want to investigate further. I doubt youâll admit that you were incorrect, but perhaps you may.
thanks very much for that info!!! That will be my job for this evening! đ Continuing my travels in Cambodia and Vietnam, so will look for Cambodia tickets
yeah, deffo get an onward ticket, I was not checked but my friend was, better to be safe than sorry , have an awesome time!!!!! Visit Pai if you get chance, most beautiful area đ
